Ulta Interview Questions: Advisor, Task and Salon Roles

By Jacob Gates 12 min read

Ulta job candidate speaking with a hiring manager in a beauty retail store

The Ulta interview questions you face depend on the posting you answered. Beauty advisor candidates report guest-service questions and a push to sell the Ulta credit card, task associates report workload and early-shift questions, and stylists book a hands-on technical.

Those reports come from r/UltaEmployees and r/Ulta threads between November 2025 and October 2026, Indeed employee answers and Glassdoor, set against Ulta’s own careers pages and ten store postings read on October 20, 2026. Processes vary by store, so treat each item as a report, not a rule.

After ten years on the interviewer side, I’d tell you to read the posting before you read any question list. Its age line, license line, schedule and pay range narrow what you’ll be asked and whether you can be hired at all.

How Ulta hiring runs, from the careers site to your first shift

Every store job, and so every Ulta Beauty interview, starts on Ulta’s careers site job search. You pick a role and a location, then Apply Now on a posting opens Ulta’s candidate portal. The Beauty Advisor posting in Sacramento, California (number 548103) says Ulta considers applications on an ongoing basis.

Ulta’s job search page also carries a scam alert, read October 20, 2026: no recruiter or employee will ask for a Social Security number, credit card, driver’s license or bank details by text or email. Treat any message that does as suspect.

Who is the employer? Ulta’s annual report for the year ended February 1, 2025 says the company operates more than 1,400 stores, so a store job is an Ulta job. The Ulta Beauty at Target counters were different. The same report says Target team members, trained by Ulta, staffed those shops, and Fox29 reported on August 15, 2025 that the two companies wouldn’t renew the shop-in-shop deal when it expired in August 2026. So a Target job isn’t a route to an Ulta counter; our Target interview questions guide covers Target’s own hiring.

Who interviews you? In the reports, a store manager. One r/UltaEmployees reply in July 2026 (10 upvotes) said the hiring manager is likely the experience manager, though it varies by store. A reply in a thread from August 2026 (16 upvotes) shows how the early steps can run when an application goes quiet:

“I waited I think 5-7 days and when I did not hear anything back I called and asked to speak to the hiring manager about my application status. Did a quick phone interview, and then set up an in person interview for the next week.”
– r/UltaEmployees, August 2026 (16 upvotes)

That thread splits on walking in. The same reply called an in-person visit a good idea if you hear nothing, while another reply (7 upvotes) said managers at their store would put a walk-in applicant into an “annoying, do not hire” category. A phone call is the lower-risk first move.

Formats differ by store. A beauty advisor candidate had a group interview in September 2026 (3 upvotes), while a reply in that thread (2 upvotes) described a brief one-on-one. Glassdoor’s page, updated October 2, 2026, lists one-on-one as the most common stage across all Ulta job titles at 28%, ahead of phone at 12% and group panel at 10%. Skills tests show up at 10% and personality tests at 7%, and none of the 2026 Ulta threads describes a recorded-answer step like the one in our Best Buy interview questions guide.

How long until you hear back? Glassdoor puts the average at 12 days across all titles, from 2,255 interviews rated 67.8% positive and 2.17 out of 5 for difficulty. Store-level replies in July 2026 range from an offer letter on interview day (7 upvotes) to about three weeks (2 upvotes).

Four reported steps in an Ulta store hire: find the posting, wait and follow up, interview at the store, then the offer and availability form

Ulta interview questions store managers are reported to ask

These six come from 2026 threads, Indeed answers dated 2023 to 2026 and the duty lists in Ulta’s postings, and each entry says which. The samples are coaching examples for you to adapt with your own story. They aren’t Ulta scripts.

1. Why do you want to work at Ulta?

Indeed answers from 2023 give this as the opener. A former store cashier lists “What makes you want to work at Ulta?” (September 2023), and a former beauty advisor remembers being asked what interested them in Ulta and whether they knew anything about the company (July 2023). The posting shows what the role is built around: it asks for a passion for the beauty industry, exceptional guest service and the aptitude to learn product knowledge.

Say: “I’m in a store most weeks for skincare, I like explaining what worked for me, and I can work every Saturday and Sunday.” Not: “I just love makeup.” The first answer gives a reason, a skill and a schedule in one breath.

2. What hours can you work, and are overnights okay?

A beauty advisor who answered on Indeed in November 2023 recalls being asked whether they had a way to get to the store and whether overnight shifts were okay. Ulta’s postings explain why. The Task Associate posting in Mason, Ohio lists early morning, overnight and weekend shifts, and the Beauty Advisor posting lists days, evenings, weekends and holidays.

A beauty advisor candidate in September 2026 was told in a reply (2 upvotes) to be transparent, because Ulta asks you to fill out an availability form if it moves forward with you. Availability decides outcomes at other retailers too, as our Kohl’s interview questions guide shows. Our Bath & Body Works interview questions guide covers another beauty and fragrance store, where the interview often includes a mock sell.

A workable answer: “Tuesday through Friday after 3 p.m., all day Saturday, and I can do early mornings when a shipment lands.” Offer only hours you’ll keep, because the store will schedule you into whatever you state.

3. How would you offer the Ulta credit card?

The Beauty Advisor posting lists sharing the benefits of the guest loyalty program, “including credit,” among its duties, and the Stylist posting in San Antonio ties its goals to loyalty, including credit. A reply from September 2026 (2 upvotes) said the main question in a brief one-on-one was how to sell the credit card, so know the perks.

A reply in an October 2025 thread about seasonal task jobs (3 upvotes) put the other side: you’ll have to talk about the card, and the push can feel heavy. Another reply there (4 upvotes) said seasonal hires feel less of that pressure. What does the interviewer want to see? My read is that you can raise it once, honestly, and move on.

Weak: “I’d just keep asking until they say yes.” Stronger: “I’d mention it at checkout, name the perk that fits what they’re buying, and drop it if they decline.” Read the card terms on Ulta’s own site first so every benefit you name is real.

An applicant in r/Ulta in May 2026 (5 upvotes) said this question hurt them, partly because they were new to makeup. A former beauty advisor replying (12 upvotes) said to learn from the subreddit and follow some YouTube creators.

Honesty beats bluffing when you’re new. A former district trainer wrote on Indeed in May 2026 that if you don’t know your stuff, it will show, so claim only the habits you really have.

  1. Name one or two sources you actually use.
  2. Describe the last product you tried because of them.
  3. Say what you learned, including when it didn’t work.

A sample: “I watch two reviewers who test products on skin like mine, and last month I tried a cream blush because of one of them. It looked better than I expected on my cheeks, but it faded by lunch.”

5. How do you stay on top of work during a shipment? (task associates)

Ulta’s Task Associate posting centers on shipment and replenishment, merchandise sets and inventory counts. A reply from August 2026 (6 upvotes) describes the questions that follow from it:

“They’ll mainly ask questions about how you get work done in a timely manner, how you manage your work load, how quickly you work, how you stay organized, etc.”
– r/UltaEmployees, August 2026 (6 upvotes)

The same replier said bartending skills transfer, so highlight how you work under pressure and multitask. That fits an applicant with service jobs but no retail history.

Say: “I sort the boxes by what guests will see first, finish one aisle before I start another, and I tell the manager early if a count looks off.” Not: “I just work fast.” Speed alone doesn’t show how you stay organized.

6. Walk me through helping a guest choose a foundation (beauty advisors)

No employee report gives this exact wording. It’s built from the posting’s duty list, which includes makeup applications, skincare analysis and product demonstrations. How much product knowledge you need is disputed. A September 2026 reply (5 upvotes) said knowing products and how to shade match is important, while another (2 upvotes) called it helpful but not required.

Show the order of your process. Ask what the guest wants first, test two shades on skin, check them in daylight if the store lets you, then suggest one complementary item as the posting describes. Stay inside what you can explain, and admit what you’d look up.

Prestige roles aim higher. The Prestige Beauty Advisor posting in Scranton, Pennsylvania asks for significant competency for prestige product, guest service and selling. It also names a cosmetology, esthetician or demonstrator’s license where state law requires one.

The salon technical interview for stylists

Ulta’s Beauty Services page lists Hair Stylist, Assistant Stylist, two esthetician roles, Brow Waxing Expert and Guest Service Coordinator, among others. The Stylist posting in San Antonio, Texas names a cosmetology license under education and a sales goal of $800 average weekly sales for hair services. The same posting ties the stylist to the store’s retail and service sales goals, which fits the replies below about product suggestions and rebooking.

What’s the technical? A July 2026 poster (3 upvotes) said they were told to do a highlight with a minimum of five foils, a layered cut and a blowout. A November 2025 thread (3 upvotes) offers this advice on treating it:

“Best way to do it is act like they’re a brand new client. Detailed consult, provide service (don’t get yourself into anything too crazy… a partial highlight, cut and blowout) and finish with product suggestions and “rebooking”.”
– r/UltaEmployees, November 2025 (3 upvotes)

Another stylist in that thread (2 upvotes) said their technical felt relaxed, a partial highlight with a root smudge plus a cut and style, and that four years of experience still meant starting at the first tier. Ask where you’d start before you accept.

The Assistant Stylist posting in Shelby Township, Michigan describes a temporary role meant to prepare you for a stylist position. You’re mentored by an Elite or Master Stylist for the first three months, and in months four to six you start servicing your own guests. It lists a cosmetology license too. Ulta’s page promises earning potential “up to 70% in commissions” without saying what the percentage applies to, so ask for the pay structure in writing.

Seasonal hiring at Ulta in 2026

Ulta’s seasonal page, read October 20, 2026, says temporary associates play an essential role during peak shopping seasons, with a 25% discount on products and 50% off beauty services. It says no prior experience is necessary and asks for a high school diploma. It gives no 2026 hiring numbers, start dates or deadlines, so none are stated here.

Live postings fill part of the gap. The Seasonal Task Associate posting in Littleton, Colorado, read the same day, lists the same early-morning, overnight and weekend schedule as the regular task role and a pay range of $16.82 to $24.00 an hour. A September 2026 reply (5 upvotes) said seasonal usually runs October to January and that beauty advisors mainly cashier.

What if you’ve applied and heard nothing? A thread from October 5, 2026 had a reply with this answer:

“Seasonal hiring doesn’t start until today. I would not be too concerned. The phones have been going off the rails at my store from people wondering the status of their interview or application.”
– r/UltaEmployees, October 2026 (2 upvotes)

That’s one store’s report, so treat it as a timing clue and not a rule. Our seasonal jobs hiring guide covers pay, timing and getting kept on.

What the postings say, role by role

Ulta’s teen page, read October 20, 2026, says it hires people 16 and up as a Beauty Advisor, Task Associate or Prestige Beauty Advisor, and marks that offer as not applicable in NJ, TN and TX. The Lead Cashier posting in Arlington, Texas says the role cannot be held by a minor and requires age 18.

Pay shows up on only some postings. The ones below were read on October 20, 2026, one per role, so each range belongs to its own location.

The Texas and Pennsylvania postings showed no range in the text, while the California, Colorado, Ohio and New York ones did. Ulta doesn’t say why, so confirm pay in the interview.

Benefits are on Ulta’s benefits page. They begin on the first day and depend on full-time or part-time status. Part-time associates get dental, vision, life and disability coverage, while full-time associates add medical plans and paid time off. Every associate gets 25% off retail products and 50% off salon services, plus a 401(k) match from age 21.

The Beauty Advisor posting tells you to adhere to Ulta’s dress code but doesn’t publish it. The teen page says that if you aren’t sure what attire is expected, ask.
