Best Buy Interview Questions and the Recorded Video Step

By Jacob Gates 12 min read

Job applicant recording a Best Buy video interview on a laptop

Best Buy interview questions often arrive first as a recorded video: Best Buy’s careers site says some of its most common store roles open with Talview, where you record answers within five days of the invitation and get one take per question.

Most other roles, including leadership and corporate jobs, start with a recruiter phone call instead. Everything below comes from Best Buy’s own careers pages, five job postings dated October 1 to October 14, 2026, and Reddit reports from January 2025 to October 2026, all read on October 18, 2026. Stores run things differently, so treat each report as one person’s experience.

How Best Buy hiring works, from application to offer

Best Buy’s hiring process page lists four steps. You fill in an online application that takes six to eight minutes and get a confirmation email. A first interview of about 30 minutes follows, by phone or video. Top candidates then sit a final round of one to two hours, and the hiring manager or recruiter reaches out with an offer.

Who sits across from you changes at each step. Best Buy says its recruiters run the phone interviews and pick who moves forward. The final round is with the hiring manager and other team members, sometimes split into two sessions, in person or on Microsoft Teams depending on the position.

What does that final round cover? Best Buy’s tips page says you’ll start with your experience and why you want the role, then answer questions about your skills, critical thinking, working with others and overcoming challenges.

Four numbered steps in Best Buy hiring: apply online in six to eight minutes, first interview of about 30 minutes, final interview of one to two hours, then an offer or a call

Real timelines run looser than four steps suggest. One December 2025 post on r/BestBuyWorkers described applying on October 28, recording a video interview on October 30, sitting an in-person interview on November 12 and being hired on December 4, with no schedule yet. A commenter guessed the job was seasonal (8 upvotes). An October 2026 thread (11 upvotes) went the other way: a seasonal applicant got a five-minute phone call, then a manager interview two days later that lasted under 15 minutes and ended with the poster hired on the spot.

Tone differs by store too. A February 2026 reply on r/Bestbuy (1 upvote) described two interviews at two stores: one by the book, with questions like “Why Best Buy?”, and one that was a plain conversation with the Marketplace Director about life plans and goals. Prepare your standard answers, then be ready to talk like a person.

The Best Buy video interview: what the careers site says and what candidates report

The Best Buy video interview is an on-demand recording in Talview, an online interviewing tool, that prompts you with a series of questions and saves your answers for a hiring leader to review later. If you qualify, Best Buy emails an invitation and you have five days to finish it.

That comes from Best Buy’s video interview preparation page. You can record on a computer, tablet or smartphone with a front-facing camera, and the email walks you through setup. Like an in-person interview, you get one chance at each question and can’t go back to re-record. Practice questions come first, so use them to check your sound, your framing and your nerves.

Best Buy’s candidate pages don’t publish the questions, how many there are or a time limit. Candidates fill the gap, with a catch: each figure below is one or two people’s account, and your invitation is the final word. A December 2025 thread on r/Bestbuy (6 upvotes) is the fullest. One commenter described the timing like this:

“you get a brief period to read over the question and practice to your yourself before it starts recording.”
– r/Bestbuy, December 2025 (1 upvote)

The same commenter put the timer at “like 2 minutes or less” and, asked in January 2026 whether that was total or per question, answered per question, adding that both their sales advisor and Geek Squad interviews ran around 20 minutes. The thread doesn’t say whether the timer covers reading or answering, so check yours. A second commenter, replying in February 2026 (1 upvote), said the seventh of eight questions asked what to do when a display won’t fit the space in your guide.

I helped introduce virtual interviews at Walmart, which is why I treat the camera as the interviewer. Best Buy’s page says a hiring leader reviews your recording later. What is that person looking for? One commenter who wrote as someone on the hiring side, in a March 2026 thread on r/Bestbuy (5 upvotes), put it bluntly:

“It’s to gauge how well you can articulate an answer. What you say matters little compared to can you make eye contact, convey a cohesive thought, and seem like you could be trusted if put in front of a customer. It would amaze you what percentage of people… cannot.”
– r/Bestbuy, March 2026 (5 upvotes)

It’s one commenter’s view, and the same person added that good answers still help (1 upvote). They also said every applicant at their store must submit a video before an in-person interview gets scheduled. Best Buy’s pages say only some store roles use one, so don’t assume your role skips it.

Best Buy’s own advice is plainer than the Reddit version. Find a well-lit, comfortable space with minimal background noise, look behind you to see what the hiring team will see, charge your device, test the microphone and the connection, and dress as you would to meet the hiring manager face to face.

Prepare with AI if you like, then close it before you record. Best Buy’s FAQ says candidates can use AI to update a resume and prepare for an interview, but it prohibits AI during interviews except as a reasonable accommodation for a disability, and unapproved use can get you removed from consideration. If you need an accommodation to finish the video, the video page points to an Applicant Accommodation Request Form.

Never recorded yourself answering questions? Target runs a similar recorded screen, covered in the Target interview guide, and the HireVue interview questions page explains the general format, though Best Buy uses Talview.

The Best Buy interview questions candidates report, with sample answers

These seven come from Reddit reports and Best Buy’s own advice pages, and each entry names its source. The samples are coaching examples to adapt with your own stories. They aren’t Best Buy scripts.

1. Tell us about yourself, your work experience and your hobbies

A January 2025 post on r/BestBuyWorkers (23 upvotes), by a Sales Advisor screening candidate who didn’t get the job, lists this first. It’s older than the other reports here, but it fits Best Buy’s phone-interview advice to prepare an overview of your experience, your strengths and examples of taking initiative. The interviewer is listening for a short, relevant story, not your life history.

Model answer: “I’ve spent two summers working a gym front desk, so I’m used to greeting a line of people and sorting out problems fast. I also build my own PCs, and I’d like to help customers choose the right one.”

2. Why do you want to work at Best Buy?

That January 2025 list includes it, and so does the December 2025 video thread on r/Bestbuy. The October 2026 poster on r/BestBuyWorkers said a five-minute phone screen opened with why they chose Best Buy. Name a product area you like and a schedule you can keep.

Say: “I like helping people pick tech they’ll actually use, and I can work weekends.” Not: “I need a job.” The first gives the interviewer a reason and a roster in one breath.

3. Describe a time you demonstrated excellent customer service

A commenter in the December 2025 video thread listed this wording among standard retail questions for a Sales Advisor video interview (1 upvote). Best Buy’s phone-interview tips use the STAR method with an upset-customer example that ends with the customer leaving satisfied. Keep yours under a minute and in four beats:

  1. Situation: one sentence on who was upset and why.
  2. Task: what you had to put right.
  3. Action: what you did, in the order you did it.
  4. Result: how the customer left.

Filled in, it sounds like this: “A customer’s order came out wrong during the lunch rush at my cousin’s café. I apologized, remade it right away and carried it to her table, and she came back the next week.”

4. What would you do if you saw a coworker stealing from the vending machine?

One commenter in that December 2025 thread called this a “hilarious question” they were asked (1 upvote). The interviewer wants to know whether you’d cover for someone, confront them in public or tell someone responsible. Best Buy’s pages don’t state a policy, so answer with the step you’d actually take.

Weak: “I’d mind my own business.” Stronger: “I wouldn’t make a scene. I’d tell a manager what I saw and let them handle it.”

5. A new display won’t fit the space your guide shows. What do you do?

The February 2026 reply in the same r/Bestbuy thread says this was the seventh of eight video questions. Postings back up the theme: the Mooresville warehouse posting (October 1, 2026) lists organizing merchandise displays among the duties, and the Boise Meta specialist posting (October 4) lists maintaining department merchandising and organization.

The answer has three moves, and the order is the point. Build what fits, flag the gap to a lead before you improvise, then say what you changed. For example: “I’d set up as much of the display as the space allows, ask a lead how they want the rest handled, and tell the next shift what I moved.”

6. What is your availability?

The Boardman, Frisco, Encinitas and Mooresville postings all ask for a flexible schedule including holidays, nights and weekends. The October 2026 seasonal poster said the phone screen included a few questions about availability. State only hours you’ll keep, because a schedule gets built from your answer.

Say: “Tuesday through Sunday evenings, all day on weekends, and holidays when you need me.” Not: “I’m pretty flexible.”

7. Geek Squad: what have you troubleshot, and how did you explain it?

An April 2026 poster on r/Bestbuy (4 upvotes) said a Technical Support Representative phone screen asked about computer repair skills, customer service skills, soldering and the challenges of repairing. Check the role before you prepare. Best Buy’s Geek Squad Agent (Retail Store) posting in Frisco (October 14, 2026) describes a first point of contact who assesses needs and performs basic services, while the Encinitas Advanced Repair Technician posting (October 13) asks for six months diagnosing, troubleshooting or repairing technology products.

A September 2026 reply on r/GeekSquad (1 upvote) draws the same line:

“So the first thing to know is that this is not a repair job. Your job is to offer and recommend geek squad services and basic trouble shoot, not fix the issue. It is a retail environment, not IT.”
– r/GeekSquad, September 2026 (1 upvote)

So which story do you tell? Pick one real fix, then give it in three parts: the symptom, what you checked first, and what you told the owner afterward in plain words. A spec list tells the interviewer little, because the role starts at the check-in desk.

Geek Squad, warehouse and seasonal roles: what current postings say

Four postings that were live on October 18, 2026 show how the bar moves by role. Pay and requirements belong to each posting, so this is four examples, not a Best Buy average.

Role and postingAsks forPayPrepare
Retail Sales Associate, Boardman OH (Oct 14)3 months in retail or a fast-paced team job$15 to $18 an hourCustomer story, clear hours
Geek Squad Agent (Retail Store), Frisco TX (Oct 14)Part time; 3 months in retail or customer service$15.50 to $20.15Check-in scenarios, plain-English tech
Advanced Repair Technician, Encinitas CA (Oct 13)Part-time seasonal; 6 months diagnosing or repairing tech$17.85 to $24.09One real troubleshooting story
Retail Warehouse Associate, Mooresville NC (Oct 1)Part-time seasonal; 3 months retail, warehouse or operations; lift 100 lbs$15 to $18.75Truck unloading, stocking, lifting

Is there a 2026 seasonal window? Best Buy’s seasonal jobs page lists Retail Sales Associate and Retail Warehouse Associate roles in stores, warehouse roles in distribution centers, and Geek Squad Agent (Retail Store) and Geek Squad Delivery Driver roles. It says some seasonal store employees may stay on as Flex Workers, scheduled for busy shopping days with extra shifts by availability, and keep the employee discount while on the roster. The page gave no hiring total or application dates, but the Boise posting says its seasonal role runs from October 2026 through January 2027.

How hard is a seasonal hire? A commenter in the October 2026 r/BestBuyWorkers thread said the interview is the easy part:

“It’s pretty easy to get hired for seasonal help, the challenge is standing out enough to stay employed past January. Do your best, ask questions when you don’t understand, hit or exceed management’s goals, and you might have a shot. This is how i got hired at Best Buy 9 years ago.”
– r/BestBuyWorkers, October 2026 (6 upvotes)

For timing and pay across other retailers, see the seasonal jobs hiring roundup, and for another store-floor question list, the Kohl’s interview guide.

Pay, minimum age and what to wear

The postings list “competitive pay” and a “great employee discount” but, in the ones read, no discount percentage. Don’t quote one on your application. The pay lines in the table are the only figures worth planning around, and each applies to one store.

How old do you need to be? Best Buy’s FAQ says at least 16, and that age requirements vary by position and appear in the posting’s requirements section. The Boise seasonal specialist posting says 18.

Some roles require a drug test and some don’t. If yours does, the FAQ says an email arrives within one hour of finishing the offer steps, and the test is due within two full business days of accepting.

For the video, Best Buy says to dress professionally and answer as you would face to face. For the final round it suggests leaning business casual, such as a nice button-down shirt or blouse and slacks. In person, arrive 15 minutes early with a copy of your resume. On Teams, give yourself 15 minutes in a quiet space with your resume and the posting beside you. The pages read give no separate interview dress code.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Best Buy interview questions?

The Best Buy interview questions reported in 2025 and 2026 include why you want to work at Best Buy, a customer-service example, your availability and a coworker-integrity scenario. A display-setup question and a tell-us-about-yourself prompt also appear, and Geek Squad candidates report troubleshooting questions.

What is the Best Buy video interview?

It’s an on-demand Talview recording that some of Best Buy’s most common store roles use as the first round. You get an email invitation, five days to finish, one take per question and practice questions first, and a hiring leader reviews the recording later.

How long does Best Buy take to hire?

Best Buy publishes step lengths, not a total: about 30 minutes for the first interview and one to two hours for the final round. Reports range from a seasonal hire about a week after applying (October 2026) to roughly five weeks from application to hire date (applied October 28, hired December 4, 2025).

Is it hard to get hired at Best Buy?

Reports split by role. A commenter called seasonal hiring pretty easy in October 2026 (6 upvotes), while a September 2026 r/GeekSquad thread (11 upvotes) asked why Geek Squad is so hard to get into, and one reply (13 upvotes) said store staff can move into those jobs first.

What should I wear to a Best Buy interview?

Best Buy says to dress professionally for the video and lean business casual for the final round, such as a button-down shirt or blouse and slacks. Arrive 15 minutes early for an in-person interview and bring your resume.
