Sephora interview questions follow the title on your posting. A Beauty Advisor hears about clients, selling and weekend hours, a Seasonal Associate hears about holiday availability, and a leader hears about coaching and numbers. Eight Sephora postings read on October 22, 2026 show what each interviewer is checking.
The reports behind these Sephora interview questions come from r/SephoraWorkers, r/employedbykohls and r/MakeupAddiction threads dated between May 2023 and September 2026, plus Glassdoor and Indeed write-ups and Sephora’s careers site.
Processes vary by store, so you should treat each item as a report, not a rule. Upvote counts are snapshots from a Reddit archive, so today’s numbers may differ.
I never worked at Sephora, so everything below is read from its postings or relayed from people who sat in the chair. My one hiring-side habit comes from interviewing job seekers at Walmart: I check whether a candidate’s hours match the posting before I weigh their answers. That habit sets the order here, and it’s my judgment, not a Sephora rule.
Applying, who interviews you and how long it takes
Store applications start on Sephora’s careers site, where the job search lists each posting with an Apply Now button and a Sign In link. The pages I opened describe the role, the hours and the pay, but they don’t mention interview steps or an assessment, so you’ll find the process below in reports instead.
Read the title on your posting first. The eight postings I opened used Beauty Advisor, Licensed Beauty Advisor, Seasonal Associate, Operations Associate, Operations Leader and Sales and Service Leader. Glassdoor’s index of Sephora interview reports still lists Color Consultant, Product Consultant, Skincare Consultant, Cast Member and Operations Consultant, but none of the eight postings used those names.
The Licensed Beauty Advisor posting adds beauty services and asks for an active license to provide waxing, makeup and false application services in the state where they’re performed.
Who runs the interview? In the reports, a store manager or an assistant manager. A September 2024 poster in the r/SephoraWorkers megathread (1 upvote) applied online on a Monday morning, got a call that morning to book an in-person interview for the following Thursday, and says the phone screen came from a different assistant manager.
Some stores group candidates. A September 2025 poster in r/MakeupAddiction (3 upvotes) had a group interview coming after a phone call with the store manager and asked what to expect. The replies describe group interviews in general terms rather than walking through one, so the format is reported but not mapped.
If you’re applying for a role that performs services, a demonstration may be part of it. An August 2024 megathread poster had “an interview for makeup application,” and one reply (1 upvote) gave this advice:
“Make sure you sanitize all products before using them, either with alcohol, or by wiping the first layer away of powder. Sanitization has played a key role since Co-Vid. You should do this in front of your model so they know all items are clean and ready to go.”
– r/SephoraWorkers, August 2024 (1 upvote)
That’s one reply about one interview, and only the Licensed Beauty Advisor posting mentions makeup services. Did you apply as a Beauty Advisor? Then ask the store what your interview includes.
Glassdoor’s Sephora page, updated October 19, 2026, covers 2,348 interviews across all job titles. It lists a one-on-one interview at 27%, a group panel at 15%, a background check at 10%, a personality test at 6% and an IQ test at 2%. Among people who said how they got the interview, 69% applied online and 16% applied in person.

How long until you hear back? Glassdoor puts the average at 18 days across all titles. Store reports vary. A February 2026 reply (2 upvotes) says there was probably a month between the first interview and the start date, and a September 2026 reply (1 upvote) says some people have waited up to a week for a callback and suggests calling after three or four days, not on a weekend.
Sephora interview questions reported for store roles

These six come from the threads, the Glassdoor and Indeed answers above and the duty lists in the postings, and each entry says which. The samples are coaching examples for you to adapt with your own story. They aren’t Sephora scripts.
1. Why do you want to work at Sephora?
A February 2026 reply in r/SephoraWorkers (2 upvotes), in a thread started by someone interviewing at a Sephora inside Kohl’s, lists it first among the usual questions and adds “Nothing too crazy.” The Beauty Advisor posting hands you the vocabulary: it describes the role as welcoming every client “with warmth, confidence, and a passion for all things beauty.”
Say: “A friend asked me to pick her foundation last spring, and I enjoyed finding the match. I can also cover weekends and holiday evenings.” Not: “I just love makeup.” The first answer gives you a scene and a schedule, and the second gives only a feeling.
2. What hours can you work, and what pay do you want?
The Beauty Advisor postings set a weekly floor: 30 to 40 hours for full time, 15 to 29 for part time and 4 to 14 for flex. They also ask you to be available during peak retail operations, which they list as nights, weekends and holidays. In a May 2026 thread where an applicant kept getting rejected without a callback, the top reply put the same point more bluntly:
“If you don’t have open availability Friday-Sunday they won’t give you a call back, regardless of qualifications.”
– r/SephoraWorkers, May 2026 (37 upvotes)
Two other replies pointed to availability too (12 and 9 upvotes), and the 9-upvote one called the requirements excessive. That’s employees talking, not Sephora policy. The September 2024 poster above also says the interviewer asked for their availability and desired hourly rate.
Answer both with the posting in hand. What can you honestly promise? Offer only hours you’ll keep, because the store will schedule you into whatever you state, and point to the range printed on your posting for pay. Weak: “Whenever you need me.” Stronger: “Friday through Sunday and two weeknights, and the posted range works for me.”
3. Recommend a product to this client, or handle this return
The Beauty Advisor posting lists “tailored consultations and product recommendations that meet each client’s needs” as the first duty. A May 2023 reply in r/MakeupAddiction (2 upvotes), from someone who called themselves a former Sephora cast member, says the interview is about selling to the client:
“They’re going to wanna see if you have the ability to sell, up sell and turn around returns.”
– r/MakeupAddiction, May 2023 (2 upvotes)
A May 2026 reply in r/SephoraWorkers (1 upvote) agrees that it’s “less about artistry and knowledge in makeup” and more about helping several clients at once and adding products that fit what each one asked for. How do you show you can do that? Walk through your order of work out loud:
- Ask what the client wants and what they use now.
- Recommend one main product and say why it fits what they told you.
- Add a second item only if it solves a problem they mentioned.
- For a return, ask what went wrong, then follow the store’s policy instead of promising an outcome.
Our Bath & Body Works interview questions guide covers another beauty and fragrance store if you’re interviewing at both.
4. How would you offer Beauty Insider or the Sephora credit card?
Three posters mention it, at one or two upvotes each. The September 2024 poster says the interviewer asked whether they could sell her a credit card. An August 2024 reply calls Beauty Insider sign-ups, which the thread shortens to BIs, a main focus. The February 2026 reply says the writer mentioned being shy and worried about “getting BIs and credit cards,” was honest about wanting to work on it, and was hired.
That’s a pattern across a few stores, not a published requirement. What’s the interviewer listening for? My read is whether you can raise it once, name a real benefit and accept a no.
A workable answer: “I’d mention it at checkout, tell them the one perk that fits what they’re buying, and move on if they decline.” Don’t promise perks you haven’t read on Sephora’s own pages, because you can’t back them up.
5. Tell me about a time a client or coworker was difficult
An Indeed answer dated October 10, 2025 lists a time you tried something new and a difficult situation with a coworker or manager. The February 2026 reply lists “overcoming difficulties” among the usual ones. A May 2026 poster (1 upvote) says the interviewer asked mostly what-if questions and scenarios about past jobs.
Can you tell it in four beats? Name the situation, say what you were responsible for, describe what you did, and give the result.
A sample: “At my cafe job, two customers reached the register at once and one was already upset about the wait. I told them I’d be right with them, finished the first order, then asked what had gone wrong and remade the drink. They stayed through the lunch rush.” Swap in a school, volunteer or work story of your own.
6. Leaders and operations roles: your numbers, your team, your stockroom
The Operations Leader and Sales and Service Leader postings each ask for a minimum of two years of leadership experience. An Indeed answer from May 2023, from a Sales and Service Coordinator in Summerlin, Nevada, says interviewers asked about previous store goals, whether it was a high-volume store and the expectations for loyalty programs, credit cards and sales.
What numbers can you give? Have your own ready: the sales goal you carried, the team size, the attendance or shrink problem you fixed. Then tell one story about coaching someone who was behind.
Operations Associate postings list inventory, stock replenishment and order fulfillment, but the line between stockroom and sales floor can blur. A September 2023 poster applied for operations, was asked questions “geared more towards working the floor,” and was offered a Beauty Advisor role. A reply (1 upvote) said a Beauty Advisor is almost exclusively on stage.
Sephora’s seasonal posting uses the same word, describing work “supporting both store operations and onstage service.” Ask how many hours of the week sit on the floor before you accept.
Sephora at Kohl’s is a different interview
By the sources I read, a Sephora at Kohl’s job is a Kohl’s job. Kohl’s own careers FAQ answers what to wear on the first day for a Sephora at Kohl’s position, and the answer lists what Kohl’s provides: branded T-shirts, a lanyard and a name badge.
Who sits across from you there? In a September 2024 r/employedbykohls thread, a reply to a Beauty Lead Advisor candidate (2 upvotes) says:
“My Kohls Store Manager does interviews for me when I’m not there. Technically none of the Sephora managers (BTL’s) are supposed to do interviews, but some stores allow it.”
– r/employedbykohls, September 2024 (2 upvotes)
The same reply says the list of questions it gets isn’t mostly about beauty and cares more about leadership ability and character. The original poster had been interviewed by a store supervisor because the Sephora lead wasn’t in. That’s one thread, so treat it as a pattern to ask about.
Our Kohl’s interview questions guide covers the Kohl’s side, including a Sephora at Kohl’s posting and the work dress code.
The holiday posting runs October 5 to January 10
Seasonal Associate postings in Anchorage, Alaska and Charlottesville, Virginia, read October 22, 2026, are flex and list “Non-guaranteed hours.” They say to expect “0–14 hours per week based on business needs” and to be available “Monday, October 5 through Sunday, January 10,” with no year printed.
Pay was $19.80 to $22.90 an hour in Anchorage and $18.00 to $20.50 in Charlottesville, and each says the actual pay depends on geographic location. Will that range of hours cover your holiday plans? Read it before you apply, because the posting doesn’t promise more.
None of the postings or careers pages I opened says how many seasonal workers Sephora is hiring this year, so you can’t gauge your odds from them. A September 2026 reply (1 upvote) said hiring season was approaching and that experience plus Friday to Sunday availability should get a callback soon. Another former associate (9 upvotes) wrote that at the one store they worked, seasonal Beauty Advisors mostly had under two years of retail experience. Our seasonal jobs hiring guide covers timing and getting kept on.
What the postings say, role by role
The Sephora postings below were read on October 22, 2026, one per role, so each pay range belongs to its own store.
| Role and store | What it asks | Pay posted |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal Associate, Anchorage AK | Flex, 0-14 hours, Oct 5 to Jan 10 | $19.80 to $22.90 an hour |
| Beauty Advisor, part time, Burlingame CA | Client-focused experience, lift 50 lbs | $22.60 to $26.00 an hour |
| Beauty Advisor, full time, Greenville SC | Same text as Burlingame | $16.60 to $19.30 an hour |
| Licensed Beauty Advisor, full time, Sherman Oaks CA | Active license, 1-3 years | $24.00 to $27.60 an hour |
| Operations Associate, part time, Coconut Creek FL | 1-2 years, lift 50 lbs | $18.00 to $20.50 an hour |
| Operations Leader, full time, Ann Arbor MI | 2+ years of leadership | $24.00 to $27.50 an hour |
| Sales and Service Leader, full time, Grand Rapids MI | 2+ years of leadership | $24.00 to $27.50 an hour |
The two Beauty Advisor rows show why one number never describes the job. The duties and requirements are the same text, yet Greenville lists $16.60 to $19.30 and Burlingame $22.60 to $26.00. Both postings say the actual pay depends on factors including qualifications, experience and geographic location, so check the range on your own posting.
On benefits, the postings say Sephora offers healthcare and wellbeing benefits “based on eligibility.” The Beauty Advisor postings link to a video for details. None of the eight mentions an employee discount or product allowance, so you’ll want to ask what applies to your hours.
No posting states a minimum age, and you won’t find one on any careers page I opened.
Sephora interview questions FAQ
What questions does Sephora ask in an interview?
Reports describe why Sephora, your availability and desired pay, recommending a product or handling a return, offering Beauty Insider or a credit card, and a difficult-situation story. Leaders also report questions on sales numbers and coaching.
How long does Sephora take to hire?
Glassdoor’s page, updated October 19, 2026, averages 18 days across all Sephora job titles. Store reports range from a call the same morning to about a month between the first interview and the start date.
What should I wear to a Sephora interview?
The Sephora postings and careers pages I opened give no interview dress code. Replies in a June 2023 thread about a Sephora at Kohl’s interview say business casual, black if you have it (5 upvotes), with everyday makeup, and “a nice dinner date” level of polish (4 upvotes). Kohl’s own first-day dress code for Sephora at Kohl’s lists dark tops, preferably black, with dark or black bottoms.
Do you need makeup experience to work at Sephora?
Not by the Beauty Advisor posting, which asks for client-focused experience and a passion for beauty. A February 2026 reply (2 upvotes) says you don’t need much product knowledge. Licensed Beauty Advisor roles need an active license. Our Ulta interview questions guide covers a similar advisor role, and our Walgreens interview questions guide covers drugstore beauty counters.
Is it hard to get hired at Sephora?
Glassdoor users rate Sephora interviews 67.6% positive and 2.56 out of 5 for difficulty, across all titles. Replies in a May 2026 thread point to availability and the number of applicants as the hard part, not the questions.
How old do you have to be to work at Sephora?
None of the eight postings states a minimum age, so check the age line on the posting you answered and ask the store.
