Walgreens Interview Questions for CSA, Tech and Shift Lead

By Jacob Gates 12 min read

Walgreens job candidate speaking with a store manager during an interview inside a retail pharmacy

Walgreens interview questions are mostly behavioral: a store or pharmacy manager asks how you handled a customer, a mistake or a stressful shift, then checks the hours you can work. Walgreens’ own recruiter tips say the company uses behavioral-based questions and recommend the STAR format: situation, task, action, result.

These Walgreens interview questions cover customer service associates, pharmacy technicians and shift leads. They come from r/WalgreensStores, r/WalgreensRx, r/WalgreensPharmacy and r/PharmacyTechnician threads between November 2025 and July 2026 (plus two from 2023), Glassdoor and Indeed write-ups, Walgreens’ careers pages and eight store postings opened on October 22, 2026. Processes vary by store, so treat each item as a report, not a rule.

I interviewed job seekers at Walmart, so I hear an availability answer as a scheduling promise before I hear it as a personality trait. That’s my inference from the reports below, not a Walgreens rubric, and I never worked at Walgreens.

How a Walgreens hire runs, from the careers site to your first shift

The first step is applying online. Walgreens’ careers contact page says so, and its Walgreens Applicants link opens a separate applicant portal hosted on brassring.com. A May 2026 reply in r/WalgreensStores (10 upvotes) tells applicants to use Walgreens’ own site rather than a job board, and it describes what the store manager sees:

“The first thing you have to do is pass the assessment given to you in the application. Failing that is an automatic rejection. If the candidate passes the assessment, he checks their availability. Selecting that you’re available for mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends will most likely land you an interview.”
– r/WalgreensStores, May 2026 (10 upvotes)

That’s one manager’s screen as an employee relayed it, not company policy. Walgreens’ contact page does offer extra time “to complete assessments or interviews” to candidates with disabilities, so an assessment step exists, and 8% of the 44 customer service associate reports on Glassdoor (updated March 30, 2026) mention a personality test. Answer the screening questions honestly. A store schedules you into the hours you state.

Who interviews you? It depends on the role. A Dayton, Texas review on Glassdoor describes the shift and store managers running a behavioral interview for a CSA job. A reply in r/WalgreensRx from April 2023 (1 upvote), written by a self-described RxOM, a manager on the pharmacy side, says the RxOM is the one interviewing and hiring technicians.

Format varies. On Glassdoor’s CSA page, 28% of reports mention a one-on-one interview, 15% a background check, 8% a personality test, and 2% each a group panel and an IQ test; 85% applied online and 15% in person.

A New York reviewer who applied in person in February 2025 answered a few questions and was hired on the spot. A pharmacy tech applicant in r/PharmacyTechnician (February 2026, 2 upvotes) described a call on Saturday, an interview on Monday and about 10 to 15 minutes in the room.

Will it be a video call? Possibly, since Walgreens’ recruiter tips tell candidates to test audio, video and internet connections before an online interview. The pages I opened don’t describe a recorded-video step. Some chains do use one, as our Target interview questions and Best Buy interview questions guides show.

How long does Walgreens take to hire? Glassdoor’s CSA page averages 9 days for that job and 14 days across the company. A November 2025 reply in r/WalgreensStores (3 upvotes) describes an interview, a call the next day, a drug test the day after and a start the following week.

Silence is common too, and a June 2023 reply (5 upvotes) explains how the status email works:

“You get an automated email if the manager updates the status on your application, which can take a while. Typically, they will call you before updating it on the computer if you are selected for the position.”
– r/WalgreensStores, June 2023 (5 upvotes)

That’s an older reply from one person. Several replies in these threads suggest a call to the store when a week or so has passed.

Does Walgreens drug test or run a background check? The careers pages I opened don’t publish those rules, so don’t assume them. One commenter in a December 2025 shift lead thread said they had just been hired and passed an oral drug test (2 upvotes). Each posting I opened also states that Walgreens will consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records. Ask the recruiter which checks apply to your role.

One rule from the same contact page: Walgreens never uses instant-messaging services during hiring and never requests payment for applications, training or equipment. An “interview” on a chat app isn’t Walgreens.

Walgreens interview questions reported for store roles

These five come from the threads, Glassdoor and Indeed answers above and from the duty lists in the postings, and each entry says which. The samples are coaching examples for you to adapt with your own story. They aren’t Walgreens scripts.

1. Why do you want to work at Walgreens?

An Indeed answer dated April 2022 lists it first and the availability question last. A March 2026 reply in r/WalgreensRx (6 upvotes) expects a technician interviewer to ask why you’re interested in the role and in Walgreens as a company. A Canton, Ohio review lists “Tell me a little about yourself” as its question.

The Customer Service Associate posting in Toledo, Ohio hands you the vocabulary: its key traits are communicator, trustworthy, efficient, helpful, responsible and multi-tasker.

Stronger: “I like being the person people find at the counter when a prescription or a receipt has them stressed, and I can work most evenings and weekends.” Weaker: “I need a job near home.” The first answer ties one trait to the work and offers hours in one breath.

2. What hours can you work?

A New York reviewer from February 2025 lists “What does my availability look like” as the question they got, and a customer service associate who answered on Indeed in September 2022 recalls “My availability and customer service questions.” Why does it come up so early? The postings explain. The customer service, pharmacy and beauty postings I opened ask for willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Offer only hours you’ll keep. “Monday to Thursday after 4, every other Saturday, and early shifts when I get a week’s notice” gives a manager something to schedule against. “I’m open, whatever you need” doesn’t, and it’s the answer that turns into a Sunday-morning shift you can’t work.

3. Tell me about a time you made a mistake or handled an upset customer

What carries the interview? Behavioral prompts. The Dayton, Texas review lists “Describe a time where you made a mistake and took the initiative to deal with that mistake.” A staff pharmacist answering on Indeed in November 2022 lists “Tell how you handled a difficult situation with a customer.”

Walgreens’ recruiter tips say to keep a list of accomplishments and be ready to explain how you got the result. Pick a small, real event. A short change at the register that you caught, reported and fixed before close beats a dramatic rescue you can’t back up.

A workable shape in four sentences: “At close my drawer was short and I’d made change for a customer too fast. I told my manager that night and found the sale on the receipt tape. I called the customer the next morning to correct it. Since then I count change back out loud.”

4. Shift lead: what would you do when a customer is upset and the manager is out?

The Shift Lead posting in Toledo, Ohio has the lead opening and closing the store in management’s absence, handling cash and carrying the keys. That explains this December 2025 reply in r/WalgreensStores (8 upvotes), from someone describing the shift lead job:

“Since you’re interviewing for a lead, key points are to emphasize that you’re good with taking charge, giving direction and that you’re a confident person. They’ll probably ask how you’ll handle upset customers since you’ll be a manager on duty when/if esm/sm isn’t there. Best answer is to focus on how you’ll de-escalate the situation.”
– r/WalgreensStores, December 2025 (8 upvotes)

Another reply in that thread (2 upvotes) said to expect a question about a challenging time in a previous job and how you managed it. The posting asks for one year of prior leadership, supervisory or retail key holder experience, so name a moment when you gave direction instead of taking it.

Try: “I’d let the customer finish, say what I can do right now, and bring in the pharmacist or manager if it’s a policy call. Then I’d tell the store manager what happened.” Skip: “I’d just give them what they want.”

5. What would you do if a manager asked for something you’d do differently?

An Indeed answer from April 2022 pairs this with the availability question. What is it testing? Whether you can disagree without stalling the shift.

  1. Do it the way you were asked, in that moment.
  2. Pick a calm time later and ask whether you can show another way.
  3. Bring one concrete result from a past job, such as a faster restock or fewer errors, not an opinion.

Pharmacy technician and apprenticeship interviews

Walgreens pharmacy technician candidate discussing a prescription workflow with a pharmacist

Do you need certification before you apply? Not by the postings. Walgreens advertises technician jobs as an apprenticeship it calls an earn-while-you-learn program. Its pharmacy technician page says the program suits people new to working in pharmacies as well as experienced technicians. The postings I opened list certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as preferred, not required.

Five steps of Walgreens' pharmacy technician path: apply, train on the job, follow the PTCB steps, sit the PTCE, get promoted

The same page describes a paid position that you can train for in any store or from home. It describes a paid apprenticeship whose training program takes you through the PTCB steps to passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), with potential for a raise once you pass and are promoted to certified pharmacy technician. It doesn’t say who covers the exam fee, so ask the recruiter.

The Toledo, Ohio apprenticeship posting describes the job as counting and pouring medications, entering patient and drug information, and reporting prescription errors to the pharmacist immediately. It says the technician earns and maintains PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state required certification or registration.

That’s why a March 2026 reply in r/WalgreensRx (6 upvotes) tells you to ask about it:

“They’ll probably explain a bit about what you’ll be doing and what their training timeline looks like. (If they don’t, make sure you ask about the process to get licensed in your state AND process/timeline to get PTCB certified.)”
– r/WalgreensRx, March 2026 (6 upvotes)

The same reply expects four or five “Tell me about a time” questions, with examples such as going above and beyond, showing curiosity, saying no to a customer and facing a failure.

A February 2026 applicant in r/PharmacyTechnician (2 upvotes) said the interviewer described the training program, asked why they wanted to be a pharmacy tech, then asked STAR questions tied to company values.

Replies in r/WalgreensPharmacy from July 2026 (3, 2 and 2 upvotes) list a weakness and how you work around it, a stressful moment at your last job, a difficult coworker and negative feedback.

A self-described interviewer of tech applicants in Texas wrote in r/WalgreensStores that month (1 upvote) that the questions are standardized and draw on your experience helping customers and patients.

No thread I opened quotes an accuracy question for technicians, so these two come from the posting’s duty list, not from reports. Both are my guesses at the shape.

A label doesn’t match the order. What do you do? The posting says errors go to the pharmacist immediately. Say you’d stop, not fix it yourself, tell the pharmacist and follow the store’s error process. Don’t say you’d quietly redo it.

A patient is angry about a wait. What do you do? The posting lists resolving customer issues among the duties. Name the wait, say what you can do now and hand off what needs the pharmacist. The duties also involve patient information, and I found no report of a HIPAA question, but have one plain sentence ready about keeping it private.

What the postings say, role by role

What does a posting actually pay? Pay shows on every Walgreens posting I opened, and each range belongs to its own store. These were opened on the careers site on October 22, 2026, one per role, with a second state for the technician apprenticeship and a second shift lead posting noted below the table.

The Shift Lead posting in Tampa, Florida shows the same $17.50 to $22.50 as Toledo. The Knoxville posting was still listed on the careers site search that day.

Walgreens’ benefits page says each posting carries its pay range and that benefits vary by position, length of employment and team member level. It lists a team member purchase discount program, a 401(k) company match and paid time off, but gives no discount percentage.

None of the eight postings states a minimum age. If a beauty-store job fits you better than a consultant role, our Ulta interview questions guide covers how that interview runs. The careers site also lists distribution and pharmacy micro-fulfillment centers as separate career areas. I found no interview details for them, so I’m leaving them out.

What to wear to a Walgreens interview

Is there an interview dress code? Walgreens’ recruiter tips say to dress for the company culture, research the dress code or ask your recruiter what attire they recommend. The postings don’t spell out an outfit.

A commenter with four years of pharmacy experience wrote in r/WalgreensRx in April 2023 (4 upvotes) about dressing nicely, bringing paper copies of a resume and making sure the pharmacy manager was in the store.

My advice, not a Walgreens rule: a collared shirt or neat blouse, dark pants and clean closed shoes. It’s a notch above what you’d wear on the floor, and it works whether the interview is at the counter or on a video call.

Walgreens interview FAQ

What are common Walgreens interview questions?

Reports describe why you want to work at Walgreens, your availability, a mistake or upset customer, and for technicians a weakness, a stressful moment and negative feedback. Walgreens’ recruiter tips say its questions are behavioral.

How long does Walgreens take to hire?

Glassdoor’s CSA page, updated March 30, 2026, averages 9 days for that job and 14 days across the company. Replies range from a call the next day in November 2025 to about two months at one store in a February 2026 thread (2 upvotes).

What should I wear to a Walgreens interview?

Walgreens’ recruiter tips say to dress for the company culture and ask your recruiter about attire. A neat, collared top with dark pants and closed shoes fits a store job.

Does Walgreens hire pharmacy technicians without experience?

Its pharmacy technician page says the training program suits people new to pharmacies, and the postings list PTCB certification as preferred. Your state’s certification or registration rules still apply, so ask the interviewer when they start.

How old do you have to be to work at Walgreens?

None of the eight postings opened on October 22, 2026 states a minimum age, and no careers page I opened gives one. Check the age line on the posting you answered and ask the store manager.
