CVS Interview Questions for Store and Pharmacy Jobs, Plus the Job Tryout

By Jacob Gates 10 min read

Job applicant interviewing with a hiring manager inside a retail pharmacy

CVS interview questions for store jobs are short and practical: your availability, your past jobs or responsibilities, how you’d handle an upset customer, and whether you can work the register accurately. For many roles the real first screen comes earlier, in an online virtual job tryout that you take while you apply.

CVS also posts a pay range on its store postings, and in most of the states we sampled the Store Associate range starts at exactly $15.00 an hour. Knowing that before the pay question makes it easier to answer.

I interviewed job seekers at Walmart and later helped introduce a new interview score sheet there, but I never worked at CVS. The CVS details below come from CVS Health’s own hiring pages and job postings, read in October 2026, and from CVS employees and managers on r/CVS in 2025 and 2026.

How the CVS hiring process works

CVS lays out five steps on its official hiring process page: search, apply, review, interviews and offer. The two steps that trip people up are the review, which can include a virtual job tryout, and the interview, which may happen by phone or video.

  1. Search and apply. Applications run through CVS’s Workday careers portal. You can sign in to check your application status at any time.
  2. Review. CVS says “some roles may require a virtual job tryout as part of the application.” More on that below.
  3. Interview. If you’re selected, CVS says next steps “could include a phone call or video interview.” Applicants on Reddit also describe in-person interviews at the store.
  4. Offer. Offers come by email asking you to log in to the Candidate Home account you created, where you see and accept the offer.

The same page carries a scam warning worth reading. CVS says it will never ask you to buy your own equipment or pay to apply, and you’ll never get a CVS email from a Yahoo or Gmail address.

The CVS virtual job tryout

The virtual job tryout, or VJT, is an online assessment built around situations you’d meet at work. In a July 2026 r/CVS thread, workers pointed to it as the likely reason an applicant never heard back, because a store manager can’t move forward without a passing score.

The applicant’s entry-level applications had stayed under review for a week or two, then closed. The top reply put it simply:

“You probably didn’t pass the day in a life test it gives you. Unfortunately, you have to pass it for the hiring manager to be able to hire you.”
– r/CVS, July 2026 (8 upvotes)

Another reply in that thread claimed applicants scoring under 3 go “directly in the trash.” Not everyone agreed it’s fair. One worker said the questions were store-based and they nearly failed without CVS experience, and another said managers have failed it too.

So how do you pass it? Treat each scenario the way the job posting describes the work. Greet the customer, offer help, get the transaction right, follow the policy, and get a manager when something is beyond you. Read every option before you choose, since several will sound reasonable. Take it somewhere quiet, without rushing.

CVS interview questions for store associates

Store associate interviews vary a lot by manager. In a May 2026 r/CVS thread, one new hire said the manager only asked if they were 18 and about criminal history. Another said theirs ran an hour and went through their full work history and personality.

So what do they all ask about? Availability, your experience and how you treat customers. Here are the questions reported most often, with sample answers to adapt.

What is your availability?

Give exact days and hours. Can you open at 7, or close on weekends? The Plano Store Associate posting we read lists anticipated weekly hours of 24, so say how many hours you want and whether you can cover openings, closings and weekends.

Sample: “I can work Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3 to close, and any time on weekends. I’m looking for about 20 to 25 hours a week.”

Tell me about yourself

Keep it to three sentences: where you are now, one responsibility you’ve handled, and why this job. If you’ve never worked, use school, caregiving, volunteering or a team. An applicant with a GED and no work history asked r/CVS about this in September 2026, and the top reply suggested saying you finished your GED and want to build work experience, then naming anything you’ve been responsible for, like caring for a family member.

Sample: “I finished my GED this summer, and I’ve been taking care of my grandmother, which means managing her pharmacy pickups and her schedule. I’m organized and patient. I want a job where I can build real work experience close to home.”

Walk me through your past jobs

Expect follow-ups. Could you explain how you balanced a drawer, or what a planogram is? One associate in that May thread said the manager had them explain every responsibility at past jobs, including planograms and large cash handling, because the store had issues with former employees lying on resumes. Only list what you can explain in detail.

How would you handle an upset customer?

CVS store managers on Reddit are open about rude customers. A December 2025 thread asked managers what they tell applicants, and the top reply said they warn about demanding customers, then tell new hires to page a manager right away if someone starts yelling. Your answer should show the same steps: stay calm, listen, fix what you can, and call a supervisor for the rest.

Sample: “I’d let them finish, say I’m sorry about the trouble, and fix what I can at the register. If it’s a pharmacy issue or they keep getting louder, I’d get the shift supervisor.”

Why do you want to work at CVS?

Tie one honest reason to something real about the store: the location, the hours, the chance to learn the pharmacy side. The Store Associate posting says associates may work “regular shifts in the pharmacy as part of opportunities for growth,” which is a good line to mention if you’re interested in becoming a technician. If you left another job, our guide on why you left your last job covers that follow-up.

Questions the CVS job posting points to

These weren’t reported word for word on Reddit. But CVS’s Store Associate posting lists the duties a manager hires for, so a follow-up question will probably touch one of them. Answer with the posting’s own words and one example.

  • Greeting: the posting asks for “a warm and friendly greeting, maintaining eye contact and offering help locating additional items.” The Shift Supervisor posting sums up CVS’s customer service culture as “Greet, offer help, and thank.”
  • Cash: associates “accurately perform cashier duties,” handling cash, checks and cards “with precision.” Mention any job where your drawer had to balance.
  • Stock and pricing: restocking shelves, checking in vendors, updating prices and inventory tasks, plus helping open and close the store.
  • Loyalty programs: associates are expected to embrace and advocate for “new CVS services and loyalty programs.” Be ready to say you’d mention them at the register without being pushy.
  • Physical work: standing for sustained periods and lifting up to 35 pounds occasionally. The posting requires applicants to be at least 16.

CVS pharmacy technician interview questions

Pharmacy technician interviews cover the same basics plus why you chose pharmacy and whether you’ll get certified. In an August 2026 r/CVS thread, one reply listed the questions as “handling customer service issues, being able to multitask, how well you work with your peers, schedule availability, willingness to get nationally certified and trained to administer vaccines.”

Another applicant who interviewed by video in October 2026 said it was “fairly simple & straight to the point”: availability, why pharmacy, tell me about yourself and previous experience.

What’s different for technicians is the licensing. CVS’s technician posting says new technicians must complete “an extensive CVS Pharmacy Technician Training Program” and meet their state Board of Pharmacy’s registration, licensing and certification rules, and that duties are restricted at first. A reply to that October applicant gave advice worth following: don’t present a future credential as something you already hold. Say what you’ve finished and when your exam is scheduled.

Illustration: new technicians work under restricted duties until they finish training and meet their state’s licensing rules.

Sample for “Why pharmacy?”: “I like work where accuracy matters and you still talk to people. I finished a technician course in September, and my PTCE is scheduled for November. I’d like to get vaccine-trained once I’m eligible.”

CVS lists its pharmacy values as accountability, caring, collaboration, innovation and integrity. Pick one and back it with a specific example of checking your own work.

Shift supervisor interviews

A CVS shift supervisor runs the store when no manager or operations supervisor is there, including opening and closing. Expect questions about leading coworkers, handling complaints and your schedule, since the posting asks for some early morning, overnight and weekend shifts and overtime as needed.

How do you prepare? Bring one example of directing others on a busy shift and one of handling a complaint. Our guide to shift lead responsibilities covers openings, cash counts and escalations, plus the interview questions managers ask.

What CVS pays on the posting

CVS shows a “typical pay range” on its store postings, and we found one on every posting we opened in 12 states. For Store Associate, 8 of the 12 started at exactly $15.00 an hour, including Texas, Florida and North Carolina.

The chart draws the Store Associate range on a shared scale, which the table below does not; the table adds pharmacy technician and shift supervisor pay.
State (posting city)Store AssociatePharmacy TechnicianShift Supervisor
Texas$15.00-$19.00$16.50-$25.00$16.50-$24.00
Florida$15.00-$19.00$16.50-$25.00$16.00-$23.00
Pennsylvania$15.00-$19.00$16.00-$24.00$16.50-$24.00
Ohio$15.00$17.00$16.00
Illinois$15.00-$22.00$19.05-$29.05$19.05-$28.05
Massachusetts$15.00-$22.00$17.00-$27.00$17.00-$26.00
New Jersey$15.92-$22.92$17.92-$27.92$17.92-$26.92
New York$17.00-$24.00$19.00-$29.00$19.00-$28.00
California$18.36$18.90-$28.90$18.35

One posting per role and state, read October 29, 2026; cities differ by role, and a single figure means the posting gave the same number for both ends. CVS says the range covers every position in the job grade, and the actual offer depends on experience, education and geography, so don’t count on the top of the range as a new hire.

Hours matter as much as the rate. At the Plano posting’s 24 anticipated hours and $15.00 an hour, that’s $360 a week before taxes; our hourly to salary calculator works it out for your own numbers. What if they ask what pay you expect? Naming a figure inside the posted range is the safe answer.

After the interview: background check, start date and status glitches

Hearing back can take a day or a few weeks, and the wait usually isn’t about the interview. Applicants on r/CVS describe three common holdups after the interview itself.

  • Background check. In a March 2026 thread, one pharmacy technician heard back the same day but was still waiting on a background check almost three weeks later. Others said theirs took a day or two.
  • “No Longer Considered.” In June 2026, an applicant saw that status after being invited to a second interview. The top reply said to call the manager because it could be a glitch, and another applicant said the same thing happened to them before they got an offer.
  • Start date. In January 2026, a new hire was confused because Workday showed a start date they hadn’t agreed to. Replies explained that under a newer “smart start” process the manager and new hire are supposed to agree on the first day before it’s entered. If your date looks wrong, call your manager.

CVS interview FAQ

Is CVS hard to get hired at?

The interview usually isn’t. The virtual job tryout is the bigger hurdle, since replies in a July 2026 r/CVS thread said managers can’t hire applicants who don’t pass it. Pharmacy technician applicants on Reddit often describe stores as eager to hire.

What does CVS look for in an employee?

Its postings ask for a warm greeting with eye contact, accurate cash handling, help for customers in every department and reliable attendance. Its pharmacy values are accountability, caring, collaboration, innovation and integrity.

How old do you have to be to work at CVS?

At least 16, according to the Store Associate and Pharmacy Technician postings we read. State rules may limit hours or tasks for workers under 18.

Is the CVS interview on video?

It can be. CVS says interviews could include a phone call or video interview, and its interview page tells candidates to “just be yourself and have fun.” Store jobs are also often interviewed in person.

How long does CVS take to hire?

Anywhere from a day to several weeks. Offers can come quickly, but background checks have taken close to three weeks for some applicants in 2026.
