Olive Garden Interview Questions: What Each Role Gets Asked

By Jacob Gates 12 min read

Olive Garden job applicant in an interview with a restaurant manager

Olive Garden interviews are short manager conversations about your availability, your last job and how you treat people. Glassdoor candidates rate the difficulty 2 out of 5 across 1,665 interview reports (page updated October 10, 2026), and 71.5% call the experience positive.

The Olive Garden interview questions candidates report are basic, and most of them are about scheduling and your work history. What separates an offer from silence is plainer: whether your open hours fit the shifts a manager needs to fill, and whether you sound warm to a stranger across a table. You can prepare both tonight.

I interviewed job seekers at Walmart, and my advice from that chair is simple: give a narrow, honest availability rather than a cheerful “anytime.”

Where Olive Garden hiring starts, and who interviews you

Olive Garden lists hourly openings on its own careers site, jobs.olivegarden.com, with search pages for hosts, servers, bartenders, bussers, To-Go Specialists, dishwashers, prep cooks and line cooks (checked October 17, 2026).

Darden lists Olive Garden among its brands and says on darden.com that it owns and operates more than 2,200 restaurants, so a U.S. Olive Garden dining room is generally a Darden-run restaurant. Darden’s franchising page also offers Olive Garden to international and U.S. airport partners, and those locations may hire differently.

The first contact is automated. Fortune reported on February 17, 2024 that applicants meet an AI chatbot named Olivia and then a personality assessment built from illustrated blue figures, and that a Darden spokesperson called it “one of many ways” restaurant leaders assess candidates.

Reddit posts from 2025 and 2026 still mention the “Olivia bot” booking interviews and texting candidates.

Glassdoor’s reports show how often each stage comes up. Of 1,665 interview reports, 42% mention a one-on-one interview, 11% a personality test, 8% a background check, 6% an IQ intelligence test and 2% a group panel. Those shares overlap, because each candidate mentions only the stages they met.

Share of 1,665 Glassdoor Olive Garden interview reports that mention each stage, led by one-on-one interviews at 42 percent

How should you handle the personality quiz? Answer it the way you actually work. Fortune noted that the quiz itself says there is no one right answer, and guessing at a winning profile only leaves you describing someone you’d have to act like for months.

After the booking, candidate reports split. A San Diego server reviewer on Glassdoor was offered the job on the spot after one interview. A Salt Lake City hostess reviewer found the second interview forgotten and met a different manager than expected. A February 2026 r/olivegarden poster sat through three interviews with three managers before a server offer.

A July 2026 thread from a candidate who went through three rounds and then heard nothing drew this reply, which got 16 upvotes:

“One thing I wish everyone would know. We are not allowed to turn off applications. Olive Garden requires us to be always hiring. It’s a waste of peoples time, but they definitely shouldn’t have brought you in for three interviews if they weren’t going to hire you.”
– r/olivegarden, July 2026 (16 upvotes)

That is one staff member’s report, and Olive Garden’s own pages don’t describe a rule like it. Does an invitation mean a job is open? Not necessarily. It tells you a manager has a slot to fill, not that the restaurant has an opening in your role.

Ask which positions the manager is hiring for, and keep other applications moving. Chipotle also books interviews through a bot, and our Chipotle interview guide covers where that hand-off breaks.

Olive Garden interview questions candidates report

These come from Glassdoor entries and r/olivegarden threads from 2025 and 2026. They are reports from individual candidates and staff, and each restaurant runs its own interviews.

“What’s your availability?”

A self-described host answered a September 2026 thread about a host interview this way, 2 upvotes:

“They mostly ask your availability, recent working experience, why did you quit, if you study, future prospects, etc. They most likely will follow up a second interview with the GM if they like you, and, more importantly, if your availability works for them.”
– r/olivegarden, September 2026 (2 upvotes)

Why does one question carry so much weight? A manager builds the weekly schedule out of your hours, so vague hours leave a hole. Say this: “I can work Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, plus Monday and Tuesday after 4. I’m in class Wednesdays and Thursdays.” Not this: “Whenever you need me.” Don’t promise hours you can’t keep, because a schedule built on them breaks down fast.

“Tell me about your last job” and “Why did you leave?”

A San Diego server reviewer on Glassdoor lists “why did you leave your last job” as the question they remember. A Brighton, Colorado dishwasher reviewer wrote that the interview was easy, lasted 15 minutes and mostly covered their previous job.

What is the interviewer checking? Whether you stay, and whether you speak well of people. Say this: “I left because my hours were cut and I want a place where I can pick up shifts.” Not this: a story about a bad manager.

What if you have no job history? A February 2026 reply on r/olivegarden told a first-time host applicant that volunteering is fair to mention, and it fits the next question too.

“Why would you be a good fit for Olive Garden?”

A Salt Lake City hostess reviewer on Glassdoor lists this one. Olive Garden’s Host posting for Las Vegas, dated October 2, 2026, describes the job as the guests’ first impression: a friendly greeting, walking guests to the table and thanking them as they leave. Its Server posting for Myrtle Beach, dated October 1, 2026, adds knowledge of food, wine and fresh ingredients.

Use the posting’s own words for the role you want. Say this: “I like being the first face a guest sees, and I stay calm when a line forms.” Not this: “I just need a job.” Is it wrong to need the income? No, but give them one reason that’s about guests too.

“What experience do you have working with people?”

Another replier in that September thread, who said they were hired as a server, listed three prompts: what relevant experience you have with people, whether from work or not, your best attributes, and your availability. What if you’ve never worked in a restaurant? Pick one concrete moment from school, a club, childcare or volunteering where you kept someone calm or got a group moving.

“Where do you want to be in a year?”

The host quoted above lists “future prospects.” Darden’s page on its team members says 68% of its restaurant managers were promoted from hourly ranks in fiscal 2026, a figure that covers all its brands. You can say you’d like to learn the floor first and then train or move into management, and the company’s own numbers back that path.

“What would you do if a guest were upset?”

I found no Glassdoor entry or thread that quotes a scenario question for hosts or servers. A July 2026 r/olivegarden poster worried about situational questions got no answer about them. Why prepare one anyway? Every guest-facing role meets an upset guest sooner or later.

Say this: “I’d listen without interrupting, apologize for the specific problem, fix what I can at once and bring a manager in if I can’t.” Not this: “I’d never let it happen.” That line doesn’t sound believable to anyone who has worked a busy night.

How the interview and pay differ by role

Pay depends on the state and the restaurant, so the last column shows Darden’s published average per hour across all its brands as of May 31, 2026, tips included. It’s a company-wide figure, not an Olive Garden number.

RoleWhat reports describeDarden avg per hour
ServerOne to three manager interviews$29.88
HostAvailability, work history, GM follow-up$16.15
BusserCalled an easy interview$19.92
Dishwasher (kitchen utility)About 15 minutes, mostly last job$18.61
Line or prep cook (culinary)Station talk, ticket screen$20.32
BartenderNo role-specific reports found$37.40

Servers are the most-reported role: Glassdoor counts 593 Server interview entries, the most of any title.

A server who started at 19 told a first-time applicant in a May 2026 thread that the greeting covers a welcome, your name and wine samples, and that Olive Garden leans hard on upselling. The interviews in other threads stay on experience and hours, so show that you’d learn a menu and offer a second drink.

For hosts, the pay gap is the honest trade-off. A July 2026 r/olivegarden reply said hosts earn the same minimum wage without tips, and another said servers and bussers make more. Is a host job still worth taking as a way in? It can be. Ask the manager how hosts move to server.

Bussers drew the strongest entry-level reputation. The top reply in a December 2025 thread asking for the easiest no-experience role, 21 upvotes, said busser, because the restaurant always needs them and the interview was easy. One reply isn’t a hiring plan, but it matches the Glassdoor picture of short, simple conversations. If you’re also weighing a counter-service job, our Panda Express interview guide shows what that kind of interview covers, as does our Taco Bell interview questions page.

Kitchen roles look different. A line cook candidate in a September 2026 thread asked whether it’s really cooking, and one reply, 3 upvotes, described the work like this:

“line cooks will work an assigned station, (sauté, grill, assembler, apps) and you’ll have a screen with orders that pop up and you bump them as you make them… pretty straightforward. the time you leave is the worst part, cause there’s never a set end, just based on business decline and when you finish your work.”
– r/olivegarden, September 2026 (3 upvotes)

So expect questions about speed, standing for a full shift and a floating end time. Say which station you’d be happiest on and ask what a typical close looks like.

Where does that leave bartenders and managers? The public record is thinner. I found no bartender interview detail worth quoting, and the minimum serving age is something the posting or manager has to confirm. Olive Garden’s management page names three restaurant manager tracks (Service, Culinary and Lobby/Bar/Off-Premises) and a 10-week Manager-In-Training program, but no source I read describes the management interview itself.

What to wear and bring to an Olive Garden interview

Olive Garden’s careers pages don’t publish an interview dress code. In a February 2026 r/olivegarden thread, one reply said to dress professionally, bring a pen and stay off your phone while you wait for the manager.

What does professional mean at a restaurant? I’d read it as your work outfit one step cleaner: dark pants, a plain collared or buttoned top, closed shoes, hair tied back if it’s long.

A September 2026 new-server thread said hair past shoulder length has to be up on the job, though another reply said their managers rarely enforce it.

Bring a few printed copies of your resume, a written list of the hours you can work and any ID the manager asks for. A reply in that February thread said copies make you look prepared, and the application may not have asked for one. If you don’t have a resume yet, our first-job resume guide walks through one.

The same thread also carried the warning that matters most for the front door:

“Be prepared to wait. Idk if this is normal, but the 2 times I came in for my interviews, I had to sit and wait for 1-2 hours at the front for a manager. I’m pretty sure they were in meetings, but idk this is my first job.”
– r/olivegarden, February 2026 (2 upvotes)

That’s one candidate’s two visits, so don’t plan for two hours. Do plan for the chance that the manager is busy: arrive a few minutes early, be pleasant to whoever greets you and keep your phone in your pocket.

How long Olive Garden takes to hire

Glassdoor’s 1,665 interview reports average 8 days to get hired across all job titles (page updated October 10, 2026). Individual reports run from an offer during the interview to more than a week of silence.

A March 2026 thread from a candidate nearly a week out drew mixed replies. The top one, 5 upvotes, said rejected candidates usually get a text from the Olivia bot, so silence is a hint but not proof. Two others said a general manager hired them during the interview and told the poster to call or walk in.

A May 2026 thread described a five-minute interview where the manager said she’d call references and then schedule a second round.

When should you call? My advice is to wait a week, then call mid-afternoon and ask for the manager who interviewed you. Say your name, the role and the day you met, and ask if they need anything more from you. It takes thirty seconds and gets you a straight answer.

Pay and benefits Olive Garden and Darden publish

Olive Garden’s postings give little pay detail. The Host posting in Las Vegas and the Server posting in Myrtle Beach, both from early October 2026, say pay is variable by location, and the Server posting adds “plus tips.” Only the To Go Specialist posting in Los Angeles, dated October 1, 2026, gave a figure: $18.42 per hour plus tips.

Why do the Darden averages look so high? They include tips, so they say nothing about your base.

In two r/olivegarden threads, from November 2025 and February 2026, servers reported cash wages near $2 an hour in their states, with tips making up the rest. What should you ask before you accept? The base rate, the training rate and how tips are shared.

The same postings list benefits: weekly pay, anniversary pay, a limited-menu shift meal, paid sick leave at one hour per 30 hours worked starting at hire, a 401(k) company match after one year and up to two weeks of paid family and medical leave after one year.

The Olive Garden FAQ says restaurants close on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Darden’s team-member page adds a 15% stock purchase discount and a 25% dining discount for you and up to seven guests.

Insurance timing differs between Olive Garden’s own pages. The postings list medical and dental insurance, while the careers benefits page says health insurance options start after one year of full-time service and dental and vision are available at hire. Confirm eligibility with the manager.

Olive Garden interview questions FAQ

What questions do they ask at an Olive Garden interview?

Candidates report questions about availability, recent work experience, why you left your last job, why you’d fit Olive Garden and how you work with people. The entries I read didn’t quote a scenario question, so prepare one guest-problem answer anyway.

How long does it take Olive Garden to hire?

Glassdoor’s 1,665 interview reports average 8 days across all job titles, updated October 10, 2026. In r/olivegarden threads from 2026, some candidates were hired during the interview and others waited more than a week.

What should I wear to an Olive Garden interview?

Wear clean, professional-casual clothes you could work a shift in, because Olive Garden doesn’t publish an interview dress code. A February 2026 r/olivegarden reply advised dressing professionally, bringing a pen and staying off your phone while you wait.

Does Olive Garden hire on the spot?

Sometimes, according to candidate reports. A San Diego server reviewer on Glassdoor was offered the job after one interview, and two r/olivegarden replies in March and May 2026 said the general manager hired them on the spot. Others went through two or three rounds.

How many rounds of interviews does Olive Garden have?

Candidate reports run from one interview to three. Glassdoor’s summary of its reports describes one to three interviews with different managers, sometimes ending with the general manager, and a July 2026 r/olivegarden poster described three in-person rounds.

Is it hard to get hired at Olive Garden?

Glassdoor candidates rate the interview 2 out of 5 for difficulty and 71.5% positive across 1,665 reports. A host who replied in a September 2026 thread said the follow-up often depends on whether your availability works for the restaurant.

How old do you have to be to work at Olive Garden?

Olive Garden’s careers pages and the three postings I read don’t state a minimum age. Check the posting for your role and ask the restaurant, especially for any role that serves alcohol.
