Lowe’s Interview Questions by Role, With Answers and Posted Pay

Lowe's store job candidate interviewing with a hiring manager in a home-improvement aisle

Lowe’s interview questions for store jobs are short and behavioral. Luci, Lowe’s online recruiting assistant, books an in-person interview at the store, and some roles add a second one with the hiring manager. For customer service associates, r/Lowes users report three questions: work history, a challenging customer, and a fast switch between tasks.

What changes by role is the depth. Specialists get asked about selling against a goal; supervisors, about running people. To see where each level starts, I opened 63 Lowe’s job postings in Colorado on October 27, 2026, because those postings list a pay range and spell out the minimum experience the store expects for each job. I interviewed job seekers at Walmart and later helped introduce a new interview score sheet there. So the notes on how answers get scored are my own reading, not a Lowe’s rubric.

How the Lowe’s hiring process works for store jobs

Lowe’s lays out one path for store and warehouse jobs on its Getting hired page. Here it is in order, with the timing Lowe’s and candidates report:

  1. Apply online or through Luci. You’ll give the last four digits of your Social Security number and your birth month and day, not the full number. There’s no need to apply to the same posting twice; Lowe’s says you’re already in its system.
  2. Luci schedules an in-person interview. It takes place at your store or facility. Luci also sends status updates during and after the interview process.
  3. A second interview, for some roles. Depending on the job, a hiring manager or facility leader meets you again in person.
  4. Offer, then pre-employment screens. The offer can include pay, benefits and a start date. Screens come after you accept, and orientation is scheduled once they clear.

How fast is it? Lowe’s careers FAQ says most store roles take around two weeks from application to offer. Glassdoor’s Lowe’s interview page, updated October 26, 2026, averages 13 days across 6,279 reported interviews. Reviewers rate the difficulty 2.37 out of 5, and 65.9% call the experience positive.

Of the stages those reviewers tag, a one-on-one interview appears in 23% of reports. A background check shows up in 15%, a personality test in 7% and a group panel in 6%. Across all roles, a one-on-one is tagged almost four times as often as a group panel.

Offers often come in the room. A July 2026 r/Lowes thread asked whether “we’ll let you know by email” meant a rejection. A reply from someone who handles post-interview hiring, with 5 upvotes, explained how it usually goes:

“I do the post interview hiring. 90% of the time. We hire on the spot. If I am out of office. Or if we’re being super picky about who we hire. The managers will say something like “we’ll call you back”. And we will. Sometimes mgr A will do the interview. But you’re going to work for Mgr B. So A wants to talk to B before they offer the job.”
– r/Lowes, July 2026 (5 upvotes)

A call-back promise isn’t a no, then. It often means the person who interviewed you has to check hours with the manager you’d report to. One more thing to know before Luci reaches out: Lowe’s says its recruiters only email from @lowes.com addresses, and it asks for your full Social Security number only after you accept an offer.

Lowe’s interview questions for cashier and customer service jobs

The customer service associate (CSA) interview is short. A January 2026 reply in r/Lowes, with 5 upvotes, listed the whole set for a nervous first-time applicant:

“There are only 3 questions on the regular CSA interview. One is about work history, and the other two are: Tell me about a time you had to deal with a particularly challenging customer. If you don’t have experience with customers, tell me about a difficult teacher or peer. Every now and then situations and priorities change. Tell me about a time you had to shift quickly from one task to another.”
– r/Lowes, January 2026 (5 upvotes)

The same reply lists what both story answers need, starting with the situation and the actions you took. That’s the STAR method, and the result belongs at the end. A June 2026 thread from a first-job applicant got a matching report: one example of juggling several tasks, one about difficult customers, then small talk and the logistics of the job. Cashier interviews get the same treatment in these threads.

Tell me about your work history

Keep this to the jobs or duties that fit a store floor. Name what you were responsible for, how long you did it, and one thing you got better at. No job history yet? School projects, a team sport or volunteer shifts count, as long as you can say what you handled.

Say this: “I worked two summers at a garden center. I watered and moved stock in the mornings and ran a register on weekends, so I’m used to being on my feet for a full shift.”

Tell me about a time you dealt with a challenging customer

This one carries the most weight, because Lowe’s store tips ask you to share examples of going above and beyond for a customer. From my side of the table at Walmart, the situation only needs a sentence or two. The action and the result are where an answer earns its points.

Say this: “A customer was angry that a sale price didn’t ring up. I let him finish, apologized, and asked a lead to walk over and check the shelf tag while I kept the line moving. The tag was right. We fixed the price in about five minutes, and after that I checked the weekly ad at the start of every shift.”

No customer experience? The reply allows a difficult teacher or peer. Pick a story where you stayed calm and fixed something, not one where you won the argument.

Tell me about a time you had to switch tasks quickly

Store jobs pull you off one task and onto another all day. The interviewer wants to hear that you dropped the first job safely, handled the urgent one, and came back to finish.

Say this: “I was restocking shelves at my grocery job when the front called for a second cashier. I pushed my cart out of the aisle, ran the register until the line cleared, then went back and finished the shelf before my break.”

What’s your availability?

This question decides more hourly hires than any story does. Lowe’s FAQ says full-time and part-time store positions generally require evening and/or weekend availability. In an October 2026 r/Lowes thread, a student who didn’t get a part-time job asked why, and two of the replies pointed at schedules:

“A big part of retail is being available for the shifts. The biggest reason for not being selected is availability”
– r/Lowes, October 2026 (6 upvotes)

Decide before you walk in which evenings and weekend days you can give, and say them plainly. If you’re in school, name your class hours and offer every block outside them. Availability decides a lot at Burlington too; our Burlington interview questions page walks through how schedule answers land there.

Why do you want to work at Lowe’s?

Lowe’s own tips for store roles are “Know your stuff” and “Show off your customer service skills.” Use both. Name a department you know from your own projects, then tie it to helping people who don’t know it yet.

Say this: “I’m in the garden section most weekends, so I know the soil and mulch aisle. I like explaining what works to someone starting a first garden, and I’d rather do that on a sales floor than behind a desk.”

Not handy at all? That’s less of a problem than you might think. An associate recruiter quoted on Lowe’s hiring page says product knowledge can be taught.

Can you handle the physical side of the job?

Store work is heavy. The specialist and supervisor postings I read both ask you to lift 25 pounds without help, and the specialist posting adds standing for long periods. Answer with a time you did physical work safely, not with a promise.

Say this: “At the garden center I moved 40-pound bags of soil most mornings. I used a flat cart for anything over a few bags and asked for a hand with the big pots.”

The night before, have four things ready:

  • Your work history in three or four sentences.
  • One customer story, or a teacher or peer story if you have no customer work yet.
  • One story about dropping a task to handle something urgent.
  • The exact evenings and weekend days you can work.

Sales specialist and department supervisor interviews

Above the hourly level, the posting is your best preview. Lowe’s minimum qualifications change by level, and an interviewer will press on whatever you need to prove. That link between the posting and the questions is my inference from the postings, not a question list Lowe’s publishes.

Sales specialist

A Lowe’s sales specialist interview tests whether you have sold against a goal before. A Millwork sales specialist posting at store #1630 says you’ll “become the product expert.” The duties include project estimates, scheduling installer visits, tracking orders and training associates on the floor. The minimum is a high school diploma or GED plus one year of customer-facing sales, or six months at Lowe’s. It also asks for a year in a sales job “with required sales goals or metrics.”

Expect questions about selling against a number, because specialists are measured on one. In a January 2026 r/Lowes thread with 22 upvotes, a full-time flooring specialist was moved to another department for not “consistently meeting plan.” Bring one story about a goal you missed, what you changed, and the result after. A specialist answer that ends with a closed sale or a scheduled install beats one that ends with a happy customer and nothing on the ticket.

Department supervisor

A Lowe’s department supervisor interview tests whether you can run other people’s work. The sales floor department supervisor posting at the same store sets these minimums:

  • A high school diploma and 3 years of retail experience, or 5 years without the diploma.
  • 1 year of customer service.
  • Experience directing a team “with or without direct report responsibility.”
  • Experience training or mentoring associates.

The job is coaching, delegating, managing performance and keeping the department covered. Supervisors may open or close the store and act as manager-on-duty, and the posting requires morning, afternoon and evening availability any day of the week.

So the questions move from your own work to other people’s. Prepare three stories: training someone new, splitting tasks on a short-staffed shift, and correcting an associate who kept missing a standard. One r/Lowes reply to an assistant store manager candidate, in May 2026, put it plainly: Lowe’s uses STAR. The recruiter quote on Lowe’s hiring page names what they’re after:

“Product knowledge can be taught, the ability to thrive in retail, lead others, and adapt to high volumes is a unique and valuable trait.”
– Jenni L., Associate Recruiter, Lowe’s Getting hired page

Many supervisors come from inside. Lowe’s says more than 85% of store leadership positions were filled internally in 2024, and nearly 90% of store leaders started in hourly roles. Walmart fills its first lead rung, team lead or team supervisor, mostly from inside the store as well; our Walmart team lead interview questions page covers that interview. If you’ve applied at Home Depot too, our Home Depot interview questions page covers that store’s process, and the Home Depot assessment test breakdown covers its online test.

What each Lowe’s role pays on the posting

At Lowe’s store #1630 in Littleton (Lakewood), Colorado, every hourly associate posting lists $16.50 to $17.85 an hour. Both sales specialist postings list $18.50 to $20.00, and the sales floor department supervisor $25.20 to $27.25. I read these on Lowe’s careers site on October 27, 2026.

Lowe's interview questions prep chart: posted hourly pay for associates, sales specialists and department supervisors at two Colorado Lowe's stores
Unlike the posting table in this section, which lists store #1630 only, this chart puts the three role levels on one pay scale and adds the Grand Junction store (#1554) for comparison.
Posting at store #1630LevelPosted pay per hourJob ID
Cashier, part timeHourly associate$16.50 to $17.85JR-02665937

Sales floor department supervisor, Outside Garden and LawnSupervisor$25.20 to $27.25JR-02682208

Why does this matter in the interview? It sizes the step you’re asking for. At #1630 a specialist starts $2.00 an hour above the associate floor, and a department supervisor starts $8.70 above it. At Grand Junction (#1554), associate postings list $15.16 to $16.80 and the same supervisor title $21.75 to $24.35, a $6.59 gap at the low end.

Supervisor pay also moves by department and town. A Building Materials department supervisor in Silverthorne posts $29.80 to $33.35, and a Front End Department Supervisor in Westminster $24.00 to $26.90. A Specialty ASM posting in Arvada lists $62,000 to $104,000 a year. In a July 2026 r/Lowes pay thread, the top reply put department supervisor pay at “20-30+” depending on area and experience, which fits these postings.

Two limits apply. These are Colorado postings, which carry a pay range; a Wheeling, West Virginia posting I opened the same day showed none. And a range isn’t an offer. Lowe’s FAQ says pay is based on experience and/or education, and that the interviewer can give you an estimate once you’re selected to interview. Ask for it before you leave the room.

Specialist postings add bonus opportunities tied to sales. Across roles, Lowe’s lists a 10% associate discount, a 401(k) match up to 4.25% when you put in 6%, and an employee stock purchase plan at a 15% discount.

Lowe’s interview questions: FAQ

What should I wear to a Lowe’s interview?

Lowe’s doesn’t publish an interview dress code. Its FAQ says work dress varies by role and every associate gets a Lowe’s vest and name tag. For a management interview, replies to an assistant store manager candidate in r/Lowes said to wear dress clothes and closed-toe shoes with backs.

Does Lowe’s drug test?

Lowe’s says new hires complete pre-employment screens after accepting an offer, without naming the tests on its careers pages. A Glassdoor review from a picker/packer in San Antonio, Texas, reports a drug test on site during the same visit as the interview.

Are part-time hours guaranteed at Lowe’s?

No. In an October 2026 r/Lowes thread, an assistant store manager told a cashier applicant that part-time hours run from 0 to 32 a week. A reply with 5 upvotes said part-timers aren’t guaranteed hours and that it depends on payroll, the season and your availability. Ask what a typical week looks like in your department.

How old do you have to be to work at Lowe’s?

Most hourly store jobs at Lowe’s require you to be 18 or older, according to its FAQ, though this varies by location.

When does Lowe’s hire the most?

Lowe’s says its peak hiring starts in January and February. Hiring doesn’t stop in the fall, though: all 63 Colorado postings I opened were live on October 27.

Will Lowe’s tell me why I wasn’t hired?

No. Lowe’s FAQ says it doesn’t give interview-specific feedback. You can keep applying and join its Talent Community for alerts in your field.

What do I bring to Lowe’s orientation?

Bring identification such as a driver’s license, passport and Social Security card. Your new-hire paperwork includes a W-4 and direct deposit details, so have your bank information with you.
