Walmart Team Lead Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

Walmart team lead candidate answering questions from two retail managers in a store office

Walmart team lead interview questions are behavioral. Your coach asks how you handled a slacking coworker, a conflict or a mistake, and expects STAR-style answers. A second round with the store manager or market manager is common, though that two-round pattern comes from a Glassdoor review and stores vary.

The questions below come from associates who sat the interview and posted in r/WalmartEmployees, r/walmart and r/OGPBackroom. The rest comes from Glassdoor’s Team Leader page and Walmart’s own careers site. I interviewed job seekers at Walmart and later helped introduce a new interview score sheet there. So the notes on what a coach is listening for are my reading of how answers get scored, not a Walmart rubric.

How Walmart fills a team lead job

Most team lead hires start inside the store. Walmart’s How we hire page tells current associates to apply through the career site on OneWalmart, not the public site. Outside candidates use careers.walmart.com. The first application takes 20 to 25 minutes on average, and some positions add assessments.

From there, the path that associates describe runs in this order:

  1. Apply and finish the assessment. Walmart says it tries to respond within a week of submission, and an hourly application stays on file for 60 days.
  2. First interview with the coach. This is the manager you’d report to. One Glassdoor reviewer calls both rounds “STAR type of questions and answers required.”
  3. Second interview with the coach plus the store manager or market manager. Not every store runs two rounds.
  4. Background check and offer. A Sweetwater, Texas reviewer who interviewed in November 2025 says the check took about 12 days and the whole process three weeks.

Glassdoor’s Team Leader page, based on 57 ratings and updated October 1, 2026, puts the average time to hire at 26 days across 50 reported interviews. Walmart as a whole averages 13 days on the same site. Candidates rated the difficulty 2.2 out of 5, and 66% called the experience positive.

Which stages should you expect? A one-on-one interview came up most (21%), then a background check (14%) and a personality test (11%). A group panel (5%) and an IQ-style test (4%) were rare.

Length varies a lot. One r/OGPBackroom reply describes team lead interviews “that lasted all of one question, others lasted 30+ minutes.” Prepare for the long version.

Team lead or team supervisor: what the postings pay

A lead job at a Walmart store starts $5 an hour higher than an associate job at the same store: $19 against $14. On October 27, 2026, I opened fourteen role pages for Walmart #473 in Giddings, Texas. Associate roles there post $14 to $27 an hour. Every team supervisor and team lead role posts $19 to $32.

Walmart team lead interview prep chart: posted hourly pay bands for associate, trainer, team lead and pharmacy lead roles at one store
Unlike the title table in this section, which lists lead roles only, this chart adds the associate and trainer pay bands at the same store for comparison. Walmart #473, Giddings, Texas, role pages opened October 27, 2026.

The title on the posting won’t always say “team lead.” Most store lead roles at #473 are posted as Team Supervisor: Front End Service, Stocking, Home, Online Order Filling, Meat/Produce and Fuel Station. A handful keep the older name.

The same title pays differently by location. The AP Team Lead posting in Giddings shows $19 to $32. AP Team Lead listings that day ran $20 to $33 in Odessa, Texas, $21 to $34 in Surprise, Arizona, and $22 to $35 in Greeley, Colorado. The posting also lists annual or quarterly performance incentives. Premiums of $0.35 to $3.00 an hour can apply for certain schedules, seasons or work.

Two quirks are worth knowing before you apply. Many of the supervisor pages are marked “Future opening.” Your application is submitted only if the role opens within 30 days, and after that you have to renew it.

The duty lists on these pages are also the associate lists. The Stocking Team Supervisor page describes unloading trucks and lifting over 50 pounds. The AP Team Lead page lists cashier and cart duties. So where do you learn what you’d own? In the interview, from the coach.

Walmart team lead interview questions and answers

Walmart team lead interview questions test one thing more than any other: will you hold people you know to a standard? When I scored interviews, an answer earned its points in the action and the result. A long setup about how busy the store was didn’t move the score.

One associate posted the whole list from an interview with their coach in r/WalmartEmployees. It was strengths, weaknesses, a problem between employees, problems with the department’s current team, and a coworker who’s unhappy about the promotion. Here’s how to handle those, plus three that come up in other threads.

Tell me about a time you gave disciplinary action

One poster’s interview asked it word for word: “What was a situation where you needed to give disciplinary action? How did you give that disciplinary action?” The coach wants to hear that you corrected the behavior privately, used the store’s process and followed up.

Say this: “A stocker on my team kept leaving pallets half worked at the end of shift. I talked to him one on one, showed him what done looked like, and told him what would happen next if it continued. It happened once more, so I brought in my coach and we gave a documented coaching. After that his aisles were finished every night.”

Not this: “I’m not really the type to write people up.” If you’ve never led anyone at work, use a sports team, a school project or a volunteer shift, and say so.

How would you resolve a problem between two associates?

Separate them, hear each one out, then decide on the work, not the personalities. Close with what changed: the schedule, the zone split, or a check-in you set. Should you say you’d take it to management? Not first. The coach is hiring someone to handle this before it reaches them.

What problems do you see in this department?

This is the internal candidate’s trap. Name a process problem you can fix, with a number if you have one: “Freight sits in the back after the truck because we start the day short two people.” Don’t name coworkers. Everyone in the room may know them.

How would you handle a coworker who’s upset you got promoted?

Say you’d talk to them in the first week, ask what they need from you, and treat them exactly like everyone else on the team. Then name the line you won’t cross: “If it affects the work, I’ll address it the same way I would with anyone.”

Tell me about an upset customer on a busy shift

A Glassdoor reviewer who interviewed for team lead in Edmonton, Alberta, in May 2022 listed customer service next to leadership, teamwork and conflict resolution among the topics. For a lead role, the coach wants two things in one story: you calmed the customer, and your area kept moving while you did it.

Say this: “A customer was angry that an online order was missing two items. I apologized, found substitutes with her, and had an associate cover my pickup slots for the ten minutes it took. Then I looked at why the items were missed and added a check before orders went out.”

That last sentence is the lead part. One reply in the r/WalmartEmployees thread put it bluntly: “Remember that your job is to drive productivity for the company.” An answer that ends with a fix to the process tells the coach you think that way already.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Pick strengths a coach can use on a busy Saturday. You know every process in the department, you train new people well, or you stay calm at the registers. For the weakness, pick something real and show the fix: “I used to do the hard tasks myself instead of delegating. Now I assign them at the start of shift and check back at lunch.”

That weakness is worth naming on purpose. A 31-upvote reply in r/walmart says new team leads burn out when they try to do a whole department’s work themselves.

How would you lead a team huddle if you’re quiet?

An introverted associate asked exactly this in r/OGPBackroom. An OGP team lead replied that the huddle was still their least favorite task. If you’re quiet, say so and show the system: “I write the three priorities down before the huddle, keep it to two minutes, and talk to anyone who has questions one on one afterward.” A coach can work with that.

The team lead assessment

Some candidates take a leadership assessment before or between interviews. Walmart’s careers site says only that some positions require assessments. Associates describe situational questions where you rank several responses from best to worst, like this one from a February 2026 r/WalmartEmployees thread (150 upvotes):

“As an example an older associate keeps taking longer breaks causing other associates breaks to be late what do you do? Please rank in order of best option to worst A) ask the older associate to please not take so long on their breaks B) let them continue to take longer breaks they are probably just exhausted from standing for so long C) pull them into the office and give them a verbal warning and monitor them for future violations”
– r/WalmartEmployees, February 2026 (14 upvotes)

The top reply in that thread (103 upvotes) put the approach in one line: “Answer how a business would answer not like you a person would answer.” So which option goes first? The one that fixes the late breaks for the rest of the team ranks above the one that excuses them. A direct talk with the associate likely ranks ahead of a formal warning, because it’s the first step a coach would take. Walmart doesn’t publish a scoring key, so that order is my inference.

If you’re applying from outside, the hourly assessment on the public site is a separate test; our Walmart assessment test breakdown walks through that one.

If you get it: what the first weeks look like

New team leads go through training at a Walmart Academy. An associate who posted in r/walmart (10 upvotes) said the first two weeks covered the core values and how to teach someone a task. They also covered touring the store to find and fix issues, prioritizing, when to give a coaching, and the attendance policy. That’s one person’s account, and another reply said classes in their area ran one week.

The job itself depends on the department. A 44-upvote reply in r/walmart says a sales floor team lead, a digital team lead and a claims or front end team lead do very different work. Some supervise large teams, while others have one or two people. Ask your coach how many associates you’d have and which metrics you’d own. The answer tells you which job you’re actually getting.

For the hourly interview that most associates sit first, see our Walmart interview guide. If you’re weighing a lead job at Lowe’s too, its department supervisor interview is in our Lowe’s interview questions.
