Kohl’s store interviews turn on availability before they turn on answers. Associates who run interviews on r/employedbykohls say they turn down people with strong answers when the open hours don’t fit the schedule, and the questions themselves are short: why Kohl’s, when can you work, a customer problem, and credit card sign-ups.
The Kohl’s interview questions here come from reports on r/employedbykohls between May and October 2026, set against Kohl’s own careers pages and four job postings read on October 17, 2026. Processes vary by store, so treat each item as a report, not a rule.
I helped introduce a new interview score sheet at Walmart, so I read any question list as a scoring problem: each question gives the interviewer one thing to mark. In the reports, those marks are availability, customer manner, reliability and comfort with credit sign-ups. That’s an inference from the threads, not a Kohl’s rubric.
How Kohl’s hiring runs, from application to orientation
Every hourly application goes through a candidate account on careers.kohls.com. The Kohl’s careers FAQ says your invitation to interview appears under My Tasks, where you pick an event date, and that you can only reschedule a limited number of times. Choose a slot you can keep.
Which format will you get? It depends on the store. Kohl’s store phone-interview page describes a call with behavior-based questions and up to two interviewers, and it warns the call may come from a local or unsolicited number. Applicants in 2026 describe Google Meet and Zoom instead, so read your invitation email.
How long will it run? One applicant reported an eight-minute interview in September 2026 that never asked for a résumé and stuck to the job and past work. None of the threads read describes a recorded-answer screening like the one in our Target interview guide; the calls are live.
Kohl’s says it tries to email you the outcome of an in-person store interview within 48 hours. Associates on Reddit put the wait from a few days to a week (May 2026, 6 upvotes). An offer then moves online: forms in your account, a First Advantage background check that Kohl’s says can take up to a week or longer, and an email asking you to pick a first day.

At orientation you’ll need emergency contact details, your bank routing and account number, and I-9 documents, per the same FAQ. Minors may also need a valid work permit before they can start.
Distribution is the exception. Kohl’s distribution jobs page lists “No Interview Required” among its perks, so warehouse applicants may skip the conversation entirely. Check the posting for your center.
What if nobody joins your call? Kohl’s phone-interview page says to ring the store when five minutes pass without contact. A September 2026 thread on r/employedbykohls (30 upvotes) shows the same advice from the store side, and its top reply, with 58 upvotes, came from an associate:
“Sometime our SM/ASM will forget about interviews and it helps sometimes if you call the store letting us know that you’re on the zoom!”
– r/employedbykohls, September 2026 (58 upvotes)
Another associate in that thread said stores aren’t notified when a booking drops in and must check each morning, which is how a slot gets missed. Your call costs nothing and puts the interview back on someone’s radar.
The Kohl’s interview questions associates report, with sample answers
These seven come from the 2026 threads and the postings, and each entry says which. The samples are coaching examples built for you to adapt, so swap in your own school, volunteer or job story. They aren’t Kohl’s scripts.
1. Why do you want to work at Kohl’s?
Associates and applicants in August and September 2026 name this as a standard opener. One reply (5 upvotes) warned that “I need a job” isn’t an answer. What is the interviewer listening for? A reason tied to this store and proof that you’ll turn up.
Say: “I shop this store for gifts, I like how busy the weekends get, and I’m free every Saturday and Sunday.” Not: “I just need a job.” The first version gives the manager a reason and a schedule in one breath.
2. What is your availability?
Kohl’s phone-interview page tells you to have your calendar ready and be prepared to discuss availability and a start date. In the threads, interviewers say it is the question that decides outcomes. One interviewer’s reply from August 2026 (10 upvotes) describes the usual rejection:
“Sometimes I interview people who have great answers but their availability isn’t what we need, for example, we need closers but they can only work mornings so I’ll have to decline them.”
– r/employedbykohls, August 2026 (10 upvotes)
Another associate in a separate August 2026 thread (5 upvotes) said weekday limits are fine but no Friday or Saturday is almost always an automatic no at their store. Seasonal postings can be stricter: the Lynchburg store 0193 seasonal stockroom posting, dated October 8, 2026, requires availability for Thanksgiving week, including Black Friday, and throughout December.
Say: “Monday through Friday after 4 p.m., all day Saturday and Sunday, and I’m in town Thanksgiving week and through December.” Not: “I’m pretty flexible.” State only hours you’ll keep, because a store that schedules you into padded availability will hold you to it.
3. Are you comfortable offering credit card sign-ups?
This one is a posted job goal. The Salem store 0538 seasonal sales associate posting, dated September 24, 2026, lists “credit, loyalty” among the individual goals you must meet or exceed, and the Lynchburg stockroom posting repeats it. One associate, writing in June 2026 about an interview a year earlier, was asked to sell a pen to show they could pitch (2 upvotes). A cashier called the card the metric that decides your hours:
“…selling the card and rewards is what will keep you on the schedule. Kohl’s doesn’t care about the actual purchases in store anymore. It is all about the metrics.”
– r/employedbykohls, May 2026 (4 upvotes)
That’s one cashier’s view, not company policy. Does a flat “no” end the interview? Given a posted goal, it likely will. A cashier in September 2026 (3 upvotes) advised opening with what the customer saves rather than the bare sign-up question.
Say: “I haven’t sold credit products, but I’ve sold raffle tickets at school fairs. I ask each person once, lead with what they’d gain, and take no politely.” Not: “I’d rather not push people.”
4. How do you define great customer service?
One applicant reported exactly this wording in August 2026 (2 upvotes), and Kohl’s phone-interview page says the questions are behavior based. So you should expect a follow-up that asks for a real example. The interviewer wants a situation, your action and the result, in under a minute.
Say: “Great service means the customer leaves having found what they came for. At a school fundraiser, someone couldn’t find the table they needed, so I walked them there and told the organizer the sign was hidden. They fixed it that hour.” Not: “I’m a people person.”
5. Tell us about a time you worked with someone you didn’t get along with
The same applicant reported this prompt. Is the interviewer checking the coworker? No, the check is whether you blame the other person or fix the working relationship. Spend ten seconds on the friction and the rest on your move.
Say: “A teammate worked much faster than I did, and I felt rushed. I asked us to agree on who took which aisles, and after that we finished before close.” Not: “I just avoided them.”
6. What would you do if a customer is shouting or demands a coupon from another store?
A June 2026 reply (2 upvotes) predicted that scenario, including a coupon from a different retailer. Kohl’s postings ask associates to resolve customer issues and follow company policies, so you want an answer that pairs calm with a limit.
Say: “I’d let them finish, apologize that it’s frustrating, explain what we can accept, and get a lead if they still want an exception.” Not: “I’d tell them the rule and walk away.”
7. Can you lift, start early and work under pressure? (stockroom and truck roles)
The seasonal stockroom and sales postings say lifting up to 50 lbs frequently. Associates report truck days starting at 5:30 a.m. (August 2026, 1 upvote) and 6 a.m. at another store (September 2026, 9 upvotes), plus a question about working under pressure with many people. Can you commit to that? Say so only if you can.
Say: “I can lift 50 lbs repeatedly, and I’m up for a 6 a.m. start on truck days.” The schedule will test that answer in your first week.
Seasonal hiring at Kohl’s in 2026
Kohl’s seasonal jobs page carries a “2026 Seasonal Hiring Alerts” section for Retail Sales Associates and Material Handlers, and promises flexible schedules, weekly pay and a 15% associate discount. It gave no 2026 hiring total on October 17, 2026, so none is stated here.
The postings set the bar low on experience. The Salem seasonal sales posting says no retail experience is required, though it asks for availability across days, nights, weekends and holidays. If this is your first job, our guide to a résumé for your first job covers what to put on the page.
Will you get hours? That’s the catch. A November 2025 post on r/employedbykohls (34 upvotes) warned new seasonal hires about thin schedules:
“They like to overhire for the holidays, and you might get very little shifts some weeks if you are part time (if any at all). You might be let go if they don’t think you are a good fit. So be careful”
– r/employedbykohls, November 2025 (34 upvotes)
A September 2026 seasonal hire reported being told five to ten hours at first, at $12.50 an hour, with more promised once holiday traffic started (4 upvotes). Will you stay on afterward? It varies by store. Replies in November 2025 ranged from “we didn’t keep anyone last year” (5 upvotes) to an associate who said their manager keeps one to three seasonal hires, deciding by attendance first.

Kohl’s interview by role: what the postings say
| Role | What the posting says | Prepare for |
|---|---|---|
| Sales floor or cashier | Register work, credit and loyalty goals, 16+ (Salem, Sept 24) | Availability, customer story, card pitch |
| Stockroom | Truck unloading, lift 50 lbs, Thanksgiving week to December (Lynchburg, Oct 8) | Early start, lifting, pressure |
| Sephora at Kohl’s | Consultative selling, client-facing experience required (Woodland, Oct 1) | A product-advice story |
| Distribution | “No Interview Required” on Kohl’s page; first, second or third shift | Shift fit, long standing |
Distribution shifts differ by site. Kohl’s says its distribution centers run Monday to Friday, occasionally Saturday, on first and second shift, while e-fulfillment centers run around the clock on first and third. The Corsicana distribution center seasonal warehouse posting, dated July 28, 2026, says you should expect standing or walking at least 12 hours a shift.
Pay, minimum age and what to wear
What does a posting pay? The careers pages read list no national pay scale, so pay sits in each posting. On October 17, 2026, the Salem seasonal sales posting (September 24) listed pay starting at $14.00, the Lynchburg stockroom posting a range of $13.00 to $18.80, and the Woodland Sephora posting (October 1) a start at $15.00. The Corsicana warehouse posting offered $16.00 an hour plus $0.75 for second shift. That’s four postings, not a Kohl’s average.
For age, the Salem and Lynchburg store postings both say you must be 16 or older. The Sephora and Corsicana postings list no age, so check the one you apply to. A student in September 2026 who applied for seasonal stockroom was offered a different role, and a reply (9 upvotes) pointed to 6 a.m. truck unloading as the reason.
Kohl’s publishes a work dress code, effective May 30, 2023: non-graphic t-shirts, polos, dress shirts or sweaters, with jeans, capris, skirts or business casual pants and athletic, casual or open-heel shoes. Sephora at Kohl’s asks for dark tops, preferably black, and black bottoms and shoes. The pages read give no interview dress code, so dress one step above the work code: a collared shirt or blouse, clean jeans or slacks, closed shoes.
For a video call, set your camera at eye level and sit somewhere quiet with your phone charged. The perks Kohl’s lists include a 15% associate discount every day, rising to 35% on select associate shop days, and medical cover for full and part-time associates working at least 30 hours a week.
Frequently asked questions
What Kohl’s interview questions come up most?
Reports from 2026 name why you want to work at Kohl’s, your availability, a customer-service example, a conflict with a coworker and comfort with credit card sign-ups. Stockroom candidates also get questions about lifting, early starts and pressure.
Is a Kohl’s interview hard?
Reports call it easy and short, one lasting eight minutes (September 2026). Interviewers also say they decline strong candidates whose availability doesn’t fit the schedule (August 2026), so the hard part is the calendar, not the answers.
How long does Kohl’s take to hire?
Kohl’s says it tries to email an in-person interview outcome within 48 hours, and its background check can take up to a week or longer. Applicants report hearing back within a few days to a week.
Does Kohl’s hire seasonal workers on the spot?
Usually not. Associates in November 2025 threads said an interview doesn’t guarantee a job, and one associate recalling a December 2023 hire said the manager promised an offer if the background check cleared, and the official offer came two days later. Kohl’s FAQ lists offer forms and the check before orientation.
What should I wear to a Kohl’s interview?
Kohl’s publishes a work dress code but no interview dress code in the pages read. Dress a step above it: a collared shirt or blouse, clean jeans or slacks and closed shoes. On video, the shirt is what shows.
