The Walmart dress code lets store associates wear any color denim, shirts of any color or pattern, and sneakers, as long as the Walmart vest and name badge stay on. Walmart announced those rules on May 30, 2018, and its June 2019 vest update made the steel gray vest free to associates.
That’s the public part, and the detailed rules sit in an associate-only Lookbook, so for skirts, leggings and hoodies you’re relying on what associates report and what your coach enforces.
What the Walmart dress code allows in 2026
Walmart’s own May 2018 announcement is short and specific. It said “All associates can now wear any color denim,” that “Shirts of any color or pattern are now allowed,” and that managers could join hourly associates in sneakers. It applied across all 4,700 U.S. stores at the time.
Two things didn’t change: the vest and the name badge. In its June 5, 2019 vest announcement, Walmart said Supercenter associates get a steel gray vest with blue trim, Neighborhood Market associates get green trim, and Supercenter self-checkout hosts get a yellow vest with gray trim.
Don’t buy a vest, because Walmart said every store associate would receive the upgraded one free, and customized versions sold online would cost no more than $11.
Is that the whole policy? Not quite, and that gap is where your questions start.

What’s settled, what associates report, and what depends on your store
Most arguments about Walmart’s dress code mix three kinds of rules. Sorting them first saves you from fighting the wrong one with a coach.
Settled by Walmart’s public announcements
- Jeans in any color are allowed (May 2018).
- Shirts in any color or pattern are allowed (May 2018).
- Sneakers are fine, including for managers (May 2018).
- The vest and name badge are required (May 2018), and the vest is provided free (June 2019).
Reported by associates in 2026
- Sweatpants, short shorts, spandex and leggings are out, according to the top answer in an October 2026 r/walmart post, which added that pharmacy staff may be treated differently.
- Skirts and dresses can’t be shorter than about 3 inches above the knee. A February 2026 r/WalmartEmployees answer put the limit at 3 inches, “about the size of the badge.”
- Dresses are allowed. When a new online pickup and delivery hire asked about her dresses in October 2026, the top answer, with 181 upvotes, was clear:
“It’s unusual, so you might get some looks, but it’s within dress code.”
– r/WalmartEmployees, October 2026 (181 upvotes)
One practical note from that post: a taller associate suggested a longer hem if your job means bending to pick items all shift. The rule allows the dress, but the work decides whether it’s comfortable.

Depends on your store and coach
- Leggings and joggers. Some associates say coworkers wear them every day without trouble; others say they’re banned.
- Scrub pants. In October 2026, one associate’s coach and team lead said no, while the poster said the One Walmart policy didn’t mention them.
- Hoodies. A 2022 answer said hooded tops weren’t allowed, and a 2025 comment said they now are. Treat this one as unsettled until your store tells you.
Why two Walmart stores enforce it differently
The written dress code is meant to be the same everywhere. How strictly it’s applied isn’t. A February 2026 associate summed up what many others describe:
“Talk to your coach and or store manager. I have female coworkers who wear leggings consistently and male coworkers who wear sweat pants or jogging pants. The dress code enforcement is usually by store or coach. Sometimes they’ll be lenient other times they are extremely strict. It all depends on your management.”
– r/WalmartEmployees, February 2026
In the October 2026 r/walmart discussion, one associate insisted every store has the same dress code. Another answered that in three different stores, management picked which rules to enforce, down to a deli team lead working without a hair net.
So what should you do when a coach says no to something Reddit says is fine? Change for that shift, then ask to see the Lookbook line that covers it. Your coach controls today’s shift, while the written rule settles the argument afterward.

Food areas are their own case. The same associate called a missing hair net and facial jewelry in deli a health violation, so expect stricter rules there even at a relaxed store.
How Walmart’s dress code changed since 2014
Today’s rules are loose compared with what associates wore a decade ago. In September 2014, WREG reported a new code requiring navy or white collared shirts, black or khaki pants, closed-toed shoes and a company-provided blue vest, and employees complained about buying new shirts.

The 2018 change reversed most of that. The 2019 update kept the vest but redesigned it with bigger pockets and fabric made from recycled bottles. No later public announcement replacing those two turned up in Walmart’s newsroom, which is why the Lookbook matters for anything they don’t mention.
Where the full rules live, and what to wear before you can see them
The full rules are in the Walmart Lookbook on One Walmart, the associate site. It isn’t public. Opening the Lookbook page for store hourly associates on November 1, 2026 led to a Walmart sign-in screen, and an associate on Reddit noted you have to be clocked in to view it.
That also answers the “Walmart dress code PDF” search. No PDF published by Walmart itself turned up in a search, so copies you find online are unofficial. Once you’re hired, search “dress code” on One Walmart during a shift.
Before you have access, keep it simple. For the interview, my advice as a former Walmart interviewer is to dress one step above the floor code: clean jeans or khakis and a plain collared shirt or blouse. Nobody expects a suit for a store job, but neat clothes show you took the interview seriously. For your first day, our Walmart orientation page covers what to wear and what to bring. If you’re starting a holiday job, the Walmart seasonal jobs page explains how those shifts work.
Walmart dress code FAQ
Are Walmart employees allowed to wear sweatpants?
Generally no, since associates in 2026 list sweatpants among the items that aren’t allowed, though some say their store doesn’t enforce it. Don’t count on that leniency carrying over to a new coach.
Do Walmart team leads have to wear a vest?
Walmart’s public announcements describe the vest and name badge as staying for associates and don’t carve out team leads. If your store expects something different for leads, it’ll come from your store manager.
Do you have to pay for the Walmart vest?
No, Walmart said in June 2019 that every store associate would receive the upgraded vest free. Only optional customized vests sold online cost money, at no more than $11.
