UPS Seasonal Jobs: Pay, Shifts and the Odds of Staying On

UPS seasonal package handlers start at $21 an hour. Seasonal drivers start at $23, going by UPS postings dated September 30 and October 1, 2026, and both kinds of job are open now, weeks before the early-November hiring weekend UPS has run in past years.

Getting hired is the easy part, because most UPS applications don’t have an interview step. The open questions come after the offer. How many hours will you get, which shift will you land, and does the job survive New Year’s? Want the wider field first? See all seasonal employers compared.

Take the job for the paycheck. A permanent offer afterward is a bonus that, by the accounts below, few seasonal workers get.

The seasonal roles and what each one pays

UPS fills five kinds of seasonal work: package handler, driver helper, seasonal support driver, seasonal package delivery driver, and a small group of part-time supervisor jobs. Handlers and helpers are the entry points; both driving jobs require a license and a minimum age of 21. Which one can you do legally and physically? Answer that before you apply.

Package handlers, listed on UPS’s site as warehouse workers, load and unload trailers and brown package cars or sort parcels toward the right destination. A Bend, Oregon posting from September 30, 2026 pays $21.00 an hour, and a Seattle listing pays $21.30. Both are permanent part-time postings, but UPS’s November 2023 announcement used the same $21 start for seasonal handlers, and a UPS story from October 3, 2024 says part-timers make at least $21.

Driver helpers ride along with a package delivery driver and run parcels to the door. UPS says helpers don’t drive, don’t need a license, and must be able to lift up to 70 pounds. The job is seasonal only, and UPS says helpers are usually hired in October, November and December. The 2023 announcement put most helpers at $21 an hour.

Seasonal support drivers use their own vehicle. UPS requires you to be 21, to hold a clean, valid license, and to drive a registered, reliable vehicle with a covered bed and no other company’s logos. Pay comes weekly with mileage reimbursement, and some locations add a phone stipend, but UPS prints no hourly figure on that page.

Seasonal package delivery drivers use a UPS truck. A Portland posting from October 1, 2026 pays $23.00 an hour for full-time work, 8 to 10 hours a day, Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday. UPS says no CDL is needed, but you must pass a DOT physical and a UPS driving test, and UPS’s releases name CDL drivers among the seasonal hires as well.

Supervisor postings exist too. Part-time “Peak Sort Supervisor” and “Helper Coordinator” roles were listed in the Phoenix area on October 3, 2026, and they ask for 70-pound lifting, flexible shifts up to five days a week, and preferably management experience. They aren’t a first job.

UPS’s pages and the 2023 announcement mention no sign-on bonus and no night-shift premium, so don’t budget for either.

How many hours a seasonal shift really gives you

UPS doesn’t give a weekly number, only a range. Its pages say seasonal workers may work part or full-time hours, that the job has a set end date, and that some roles need early-morning or midnight shifts.

how many hours a seasonal shift really gives you

The warehouse page lists approximate windows. Preload runs about 3 to 9 AM and loads package cars, sunrise runs about 3 to 8 AM and loads tractor trailers, day runs about 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM, twilight runs about 5 to 10 PM, and night runs about 11 PM to 3 AM. Your building may shift these by an hour or so. Can you be on site at 3 AM, five days a week, for weeks?

Weekly hours are the part UPS leaves open. UPS’s 3.5-hour daily guarantee is described for union part-timers in permanent roles, and the seasonal pages don’t promise a figure. A commenter on r/UPSers in September 2026 said seasonal workers will probably log more than 20 hours a week in peak, even in a small building, and that twilight is harder to get into than preload because fewer people are needed.

Run the numbers before you accept. At $21 an hour, 20 hours is $420 a week before taxes, and 30 hours is $630. Is that enough to leave another job for? It could be, but it won’t be on a 20-hour week.

If you’re eyeing the own-car driver role, know the limit. A Teamsters summary of the August 2023 tentative agreement said seasonal personal-vehicle driver work for people hired off the street would be limited to five weeks, November through December. That’s the union’s description, so read the end date on your actual posting.

From application to first shift

UPS handler applications take four steps: basic information, a short video of the job, the online application, and then your offer and first-day date. The Bend posting says you “could even get a job offer in 10 minutes,” and UPS’s October 2024 story says nearly 75% of seasonal positions need no interview.

UPS’s FAQ goes further: the application has no interview step, and for most jobs the last click is choosing your first day. If an interview is required, you’ll hear by phone, email or text. Should that happen, our list of common interview questions and answers covers the basics.

Once you’ve got the offer, bring originals of your ID documents, because UPS says copies aren’t accepted. Helpers get a different start: UPS expects you to be ready for a shift within 30 minutes of being contacted, so keep your phone charged and nearby. Drivers face more: an online pre-course, a multi-day training program, then hands-on coaching at your center.

Should you wait for the November rush? No. Postings change daily, per UPS, and the biggest hiring weekend has come in early November. In 2023, UPS said it planned to fill at least 60,000 of its 100,000 seasonal jobs at its Brown Friday events on November 3 and 4. Apply in October and you’re in before that rush.

What UPS screens is thinner on paper. For delivery drivers, UPS says your driving record is reviewed in the background check. The handler pages don’t say what the check covers, and policies on records differ by building and state. If a record worries you, start with our guide to jobs that hire felons. Federal rules do spell out one test for CDL drivers, covered in the FAQ below.

Will a seasonal UPS job turn into a permanent one?

Sometimes, though it isn’t likely for any one person. UPS said in September 2023 that nearly 50,000 seasonal employees had earned permanent positions over the previous two years. If each of those seasons hired about 100,000 people, that’s roughly one in four, though that ratio is my arithmetic, not a figure UPS published.

UPS hadn’t posted a 2026 seasonal headcount on its newsroom as of October 3, 2026. The latest it prints is October 2024: more than 125,000 seasonal workers, with no conversion rate attached.

Workers on r/UPSers and r/UPS are blunter about the odds. A comment with 35 upvotes in a September 2026 thread, from someone weighing a seasonal job against a permanent one, put it this way:

“I wouldn’t leave a full time job for a seasonal position at UPS. The chances that they keep you are basically non existent.”
– r/UPSers, September 2026 (35 upvotes)

Drivers report the same ceiling, with a twist about where the openings are. One driver who worked last winter’s peak wrote in July 2026:

“I drove last winter peak and all the drivers laughed when I told them the supervisor said there might be a few ft openings after. I showed up everyday worked every Monday .. the best you’ll get is an offer to work as a loader. Still it’s decent $ with the OT but don’t go in thinking you’ll get a ft driver role.”
– r/UPS, July 2026 (6 upvotes)

A separate September 2026 thread on r/UPSers had a commenter advising that the warehouse route beats seasonal driving if you want to be kept after peak. They’re individual reports from a handful of threads, so use them as a warning against betting your rent on conversion. So what do you do with those odds? Show up every scheduled day and tell your supervisor early that you want to stay on.

UPS or FedEx for the holiday months

UPS wins on the starting rate, and FedEx can win on schedule. UPS’s $21 start matches the part-time starting wage in the 2023 Teamsters tentative agreement, per the union’s August 2023 summary. Our FedEx package handler pay breakdown (and our FedEx seasonal guide) found postings from $17.65 to $24.95 in August and September 2026.

Hours cut the other way. FedEx’s careers page describes part-time handler shifts of 3 to 6 hours, which suits students and second-job workers who can’t give UPS’s long peak-week hours. UPS’s seasonal range is wider and less defined, with full-time driving jobs of 8 to 10 hours on one end.

Which one fits your week? Pick UPS if you want the higher floor and can take overtime-heavy weeks. Pick FedEx if a predictable short shift matters more than the extra dollars an hour.

UPS seasonal jobs FAQ

When does UPS start hiring seasonal workers?

UPS seasonal postings are live in early October, and its helper pages say helpers are usually hired in October, November and December. A Portland seasonal driver posting is dated October 1, 2026. The largest single hiring push, Brown Friday, fell on November 3 and 4 in 2023.

How much do UPS seasonal workers make?

UPS seasonal package handlers start at $21 an hour, per UPS’s November 2023 announcement, and seasonal package delivery drivers start at $23, matching a Portland posting dated October 1, 2026. Weekly pay is standard, and your total depends on hours, which UPS doesn’t promise seasonal staff.

Does UPS seasonal turn into a permanent job?

UPS said in September 2023 that nearly 50,000 seasonal employees earned permanent positions over two years, but it hasn’t published a newer rate. Workers on r/UPSers describe the odds as low, so treat any permanent offer as a bonus, not a plan.

Does UPS drug test seasonal employees?

UPS lists no drug test on its handler and helper pages, and what happens in your building isn’t something those pages settle, so read your offer paperwork. For drivers who need a CDL, federal rule 49 CFR 382.301 requires a negative controlled-substances result before a driver first performs safety-sensitive work. Package car drivers without a CDL must still pass a DOT physical.

Is a UPS seasonal job worth it?

A UPS seasonal job is worth it as a $21-an-hour paycheck for the holiday months if you can take early shifts and heavy lifting. It isn’t worth quitting a stable job for, because conversion to permanent is uncommon in the accounts workers post.

UPS’s own October 2024 story, Top 5 things to know about working a part-time job at UPS, is the most recent place the company itself states its seasonal headcount, interview rate and pay floor.
