The wellness layer is the sleeper here. Target says team members have saved over $98 million on wellness products since 2015, and its 50th-anniversary writeup notes that bananas alone drove about $343,000 in team member savings in 2025. Some things never get the discount, per Target’s own help page: alcohol, Target GiftCards and third-party gift cards, items sold by Target Plus partners, shipping charges, lottery tickets, hunting and fishing licenses, optical exams, and anything you buy for someone who pays you back. That last one matters more than it sounds. Buying for a friend at 10% off is a policy violation, not a gray area.
Who qualifies, and who can share it
Every Target team member gets the discount, and Target lists it among the programs available to all team members upon starting, at no cost. That includes part-time and seasonal hires, though Target adds a standing caveat that eligibility for its benefits can vary by position, average hours, and length of service.
The sharing rule is unusually generous for retail. Target’s pay and benefits fact sheet extends the 10% to a team member’s spouse or domestic partner and eligible dependents, and workers who retire with enough service keep a retiree discount for themselves and their dependents. Parents, siblings, and roommates are not on that list, and lending your barcode to them is the fastest way to lose the perk.

Then comes the trap.
