A Ross Dress for Less store interview is usually short. Expect questions about you, about why you left past jobs, about whether you can do the work in the posting, and above all about your availability. Ross’s own job posting spells out that work, so build your answers from it.
Know the pay before you walk in, too. In the California, Denver and Seattle postings we checked, the posted starting pay for a Retail Associate is the local minimum wage, and the range is only 50 cents wide.
I interviewed job seekers at Walmart and later helped introduce a new interview score sheet there, but I never worked at Ross. The Ross details below come from Ross’s own 2026 job postings and from Ross workers and managers who answered questions on Reddit in 2026. It covers the store chain, Ross Dress for Less and dd’s Discounts, not the vet school or the Michigan business school.
How the Ross hiring process works
Ross hires store associates online, one store at a time, and the steps move quickly. You apply to a specific store, a manager calls you for a short interview, and new hires go through orientation with paperwork and training videos before their first real shifts.
- Apply online. Ross’s careers site lists each opening by store, with a req number, the store’s street address and a posted date. Search by city or zip code, and apply to the stores you can actually get to.
- Wait for a call. Timing varies. One first-time applicant in a June 2026 r/AskRetail thread said the store called exactly one day after they applied.
- Interview with a manager. It’s a conversation at the store, not a test. Replies in that same thread described it as a few standard questions.
- Orientation. A seasonal hire in October 2026 described orientation starting at 7 AM with paperwork and training videos. They didn’t finish, nobody gave them a return date, and the top replies all said the same thing: call the store.
- First shifts. One associate who started in spring 2026 said new hires shadow someone for about 30 minutes.
Ross Dress for Less interview questions candidates report
Replies to a first-time applicant on r/AskRetail in June 2026 pointed to four topics: you as a person, your past jobs, whether you can do the posted work, and your availability. One reply laid out the order:
“They ask about you as a person to get a feel on how comfortable you feel talking with management, then they ask you why you left prior jobs if you’ve had any. Other than that its just standard “Can you do the work thats in the job description? Whats your availability?””
– r/AskRetail, June 2026
Here’s each of those questions, plus the “why Ross” question that almost every retail interview includes. The sample answers are there to adapt, not to memorize.
What is your availability?
Which question matters most? This one. A self-described Ross hiring manager in the same thread wrote:
“I’m a hiring manager and I’ve had interviews where the applicant has no work experience so all I ask them is their availability and that’s pretty much it.”
– r/AskRetail, June 2026
Give exact days and times, not “I’m flexible.” Say whether you can work weekends, early mornings when the truck comes in, and the holiday weeks. If school or another job limits you, say so now. A schedule you can’t keep will cost you hours later, because a Ross store manager on r/retail said in June 2026 that hours depend mainly on payroll, but also on availability, performance and attendance.
Sample: “I’m in class until 1 on weekdays, so I can work any day from 2 to close, and all day Saturday and Sunday. I can also pick up extra shifts during winter break.”
Tell me about yourself
Another reply in that thread said off-price stores mostly ask about “your hobbies and job history” and want to see that you’re comfortable talking. So what should you say? Keep it to three sentences: what you do now, one thing you’ve done that’s like this job, and why you’re applying.
Sample: “I’m a senior at Central High, and I’ve worked the snack bar at our home games for two seasons, so I’m used to lines and handling cash. I like being busy. I’m looking for a job I can keep through graduation.”
Why did you leave your last job?
Keep it short and forward-looking. Fewer hours, a move, a schedule clash or a seasonal job ending are all ordinary answers. Don’t criticize your last manager, even if you’d like to. Our guide on why you left your last job has more sample answers.
Can you do the work in the job description?
Say yes only if it’s true, then prove you read the posting. Ross’s Retail Associate posting asks for the ability to spend “up to 100% of working time standing, walking, and moving around the Store,” to bend, squat, kneel, climb and reach, and to occasionally lift more than 25 pounds.
Sample: “Yes. I’m on my feet all day at my current job, and I unload delivery boxes there, so lifting and standing for a full shift is normal for me.”
Why do you want to work at Ross?
Name one real reason tied to Ross, not to “retail.” Ross’s postings describe its stores as a “treasure hunt experience” and list three values: success, career growth and teamwork. If you shop there, say what you notice. Then add an honest practical reason, like the location or the hours.
Sample: “I shop at this Ross a lot, and I like that the racks change every week, so it’s never the same store twice. I’d like to be the person who helps someone find the size they’re looking for. And it’s ten minutes from my house, so getting here early is easy.”
Questions the Ross job posting points to
Nobody on Reddit listed these word for word. But Ross’s own Retail Associate posting names the duties a manager is hiring for, and any follow-up question will likely touch one of them. Answer with the posting’s words and one example.
How would you greet a customer?
Ross is unusually specific here. The posting says associates greet all customers “by making eye contact, smiling and saying “hello” throughout the Store as well as saying “thank you” with every register transaction.” Use that exact routine in your answer, and do it when you walk in for the interview.

Are you comfortable on the register?
Every associate is expected to be “register-trained,” and the posting lists cash, check, charge card, refund, void and offline procedures, plus “basic mathematical calculations.” What does that mean once you’re hired? Cashiers on Reddit describe a CPR, or cashier performance report. One April 2026 reply called it a rating on “how fast you scan and bag, how fast you give them their change, and how fast you call you next customer.” Another associate said that knowing where the hard tags sit on each item comes with time. If you’ve handled cash anywhere, mention it; if you haven’t, say you’re comfortable being timed and you learn quickly.
What would you do if the store was a mess?
The posting calls this “sizing and recovery”: putting clothes back on the right racks in size order, every day. It also asks associates to move new merchandise to the floor “with a sense of urgency.” On an August 2026 r/retailhell thread about Ross, a commenter describing off-price stores like Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshalls said the whole store had to be recovered before the closing team could leave. So a good answer shows you don’t mind tidying, and that you’d do it during the shift instead of leaving it all for close.

What would you do if you saw someone steal?
The posting expects associates to understand Ross’s Loss Prevention Awareness program and the Store Protection Specialist role, and to “safeguard” cash, card information and merchandise. Should you say you’d chase a shoplifter? No. Say you’d stay safe and tell the manager on duty right away, which matches the posting’s line about calling store leadership when needed.
Stock, overnight and Store Protection Specialist interviews
Applying for Early Morning Stock or Overnight Stock to stay off the register? Read the posting closely first. The stock postings we read carry the same description as the Retail Associate job, including “is register-trained,” so expect the same questions plus more about lifting.
Whether stockers actually ring depends on the store. In a September 2026 r/AskRetail thread, an associate at a smaller store said their truck arrives at noon and everyone is cross-trained for register, sales floor, stock and fitting room. Another said morning stockers usually come in at 4 a.m. and stay in the back. A hiring manager’s advice in that thread was to ask in the interview, because “it’s different at every store.”

- Stock: the posting says associates on stockroom shifts must regularly push, pull and lift more than 20 pounds. Talk about any unloading, warehouse or moving work you’ve done.
- Store Protection Specialist (SPS): the posting adds “consistent timeliness and regular attendance,” and pays 50 cents more than a Retail Associate in every market we checked.
- Area Supervisor: the first step up, posted at $1.50 above the Retail Associate range. One Area Supervisor on r/Career in January 2026 said they were told the role would be two closing shifts, two openings and one mid shift a week, and that it hadn’t worked out that way. Ask what the real schedule looks like.
For how other off-price chains run the same interviews, see our TJ Maxx interview questions and Burlington interview questions.
Ross starting pay on the posting
Ross shows a base pay range on its postings in some states, including California, Colorado, New Jersey and Washington. In the California, Denver and Seattle postings we read, the Retail Associate range starts exactly at the local minimum wage and is 50 cents wide.

California’s minimum wage is $16.90 an hour for 2026, according to the California Labor Commissioner. The Seattle Office of Labor Standards lists $21.30 for 2026, and Denver set its 2026 city minimum at $19.29. Ross’s postings match each one to the cent.
| Role | Ontario, CA | Denver, CO | Seattle, WA | Somers Point, NJ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retail Associate | $16.90-$17.40 | $19.29-$19.79 | $21.30-$21.80 | $15.92-$16.42 |
| Early Morning Stock | $16.90-$17.40 (Mira Loma) | $19.29-$19.79 | $21.30-$21.80 | not found |
| Store Protection Specialist | $17.40-$17.90 | $19.79-$20.29 | $21.80-$22.30 | $16.42-$16.92 |
| Area Supervisor | $18.40-$18.90 | $20.79-$21.29 | $22.80-$23.30 | $17.42-$17.92 |
| Assistant Store Manager | $23.20-$36.26 | $18.66-$24.61 (Aurora) | $21.50-$30.45 (Kirkland) | not found |
Postings dated May through July 2026. Location matters even inside one metro. An Overnight Stock posting in Aurora, just outside Denver, starts at $15.16, which is Colorado’s statewide minimum rather than Denver’s. The Ross postings we checked in Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois, Maryland and Hawaii didn’t show any pay at all, so ask during the interview if you’re applying there.
With a 50-cent range, there isn’t much to negotiate on rate. So what’s worth asking about? Hours. Stock associates on r/retail in June 2026 reported roughly 20 to 30 hours a week depending on freight. At $16.90 an hour, 25 hours comes to $422.50 a week before taxes; our hourly to salary calculator runs the numbers for your own rate and hours.
What to wear to a Ross interview
Wear clean, plain clothes you could work a shift in, like neat pants or dark jeans, a solid top and comfortable closed shoes. The posting asks associates to keep “a professional appearance” and follow the company dress code, so looking tidy is the point, not looking formal.
A reply in the June 2026 r/AskRetail thread kept the advice short: don’t dress like a slob, skip the cologne, keep makeup minimal, and bring a good attitude, a handshake and eye contact. That last one lines up with the greeting Ross wants on the sales floor.
After the offer: orientation, hours and your first paycheck
Several Ross workers on Reddit described getting hired as the easy part. The harder parts are getting through onboarding, getting enough hours, and getting your first pay on time. Each one comes down to asking the store directly.
- Orientation. If you leave orientation without a return date, call the store and ask for a manager. One reply on that October 2026 thread said calling “will be seen as a good thing.”
- Hours. Ask in the interview how many hours a new associate usually gets in a normal week and in the holiday season. A reply on the same thread said Ross is “really tight with payroll” even while hiring seasonal staff.
- First paycheck. A new hire on r/retailhell in October 2026 hadn’t received direct deposit after two weeks of work. The top reply said direct deposit can take a couple of weeks to start and the first pay may come as a paper check. Ask how your first check will arrive.
Ross Dress for Less interview FAQ
How hard is it to get hired at Ross?
Usually not hard for store jobs, based on what Ross workers said on Reddit in 2026. A self-described hiring manager said applicants with no experience may only be asked about availability. The harder part is getting the hours you want once you’re hired.
How long does Ross take to call you back?
It varies by store. One applicant in June 2026 got a call one day after applying. If a week passes, call or stop by the store and ask for the hiring manager.
How old do you have to be to work at Ross?
The Ross store postings we read didn’t state a minimum age. Ask the store when you apply, since the answer can depend on the role and your state’s rules for teen workers.
Is a dd’s Discounts interview the same?
Expect it to be similar. Ross’s careers site recruits for Ross Dress for Less and dd’s Discounts together, and Reddit threads on hours and scheduling often address “Ross/DD’s employees” as one group.
How do you pass a Ross interview?
Give exact availability, show you’re comfortable talking, say yes to standing and lifting only if it’s true, and use one line from the posting, such as greeting every customer with eye contact and a “thank you.” Then ask how many hours new associates get.
