How to Follow Up on a Job Application: When, How, and What to Say

How to follow up on a job application: wait about a week, check your status online first, then make one short contact through the channel the employer actually uses. For store and restaurant jobs, that’s usually a call or a quiet-hour visit to the hiring manager. For office jobs, it’s one email. If the posting says no calls, don’t call, even if a friend swears it worked for them.

One follow-up is enough, and it won’t rescue an application that doesn’t fit the job, but it can get a good one noticed by a manager who hasn’t reached the pile yet. Below you’ll find the timing, the channel for each kind of employer, a phone script and an email template.

When to follow up on a job application

Follow up about a week after you apply. That lines up with what Walmart’s hiring FAQ tells applicants: it tries to respond within a week, though some roles and locations take longer. Calling the next day rarely helps, because nobody has looked yet.

A follow-up timeline for an hourly application. Walmart’s one-week response goal and 60-day hold are from its hiring FAQ.

Walmart also says it’ll tell you if you aren’t picked for an interview, and that an hourly application stays in its system for 60 days. During that window you can update your preferences to add other positions. That’s often a better move than a second phone call.

Check your application status first

Before you contact anyone, log in to the portal where you applied. Plenty of applications stall on something the applicant can fix alone. In an August 2026 r/walmart thread asking whether to call, one reply put it simply:

“If it says you’ve got an assessment pending you should probably start by doing that”
– r/walmart, August 2026 (6 upvotes)

If an assessment is waiting, our Walmart assessment test guide explains each version. Other portals work the same way. Amazon’s hiring page tells warehouse applicants to follow their contingent offer, background check and drug test results in the pre-hire checklist. Kohl’s sends an email when it’s time to pick your first day.

Statuses can also look stuck when they aren’t. One January 2026 applicant had 11 Walmart applications showing “Interviewing” after four days, and later posted that they’d gotten the job. A status that hasn’t changed isn’t a rejection.

Choose the right channel for the employer

Does the channel really matter? More than how you phrase it. Hourly hiring is often decided at the store, while office hiring runs through a recruiter’s inbox.

  • Fast-food franchises: McDonald’s tells applicants that hiring is handled at the store level and to contact the store where they applied and ask for the hiring manager. Chick-fil-A works the same way; our Chick-fil-A hiring process guide explains why corporate can’t see a restaurant’s applications.
  • Big-box stores: check the portal, then call or stop by the store at a quiet hour. In an October 2026 r/walmart thread, the top reply was “Try to reach out to the store, maybe stop by.”
  • Grocery chains: after an interview, ask for the manager who interviewed you. Our Publix guide suggests calling the store if a week passes with no word.
  • Office and corporate roles: send one email to the recruiter or hiring manager named in the posting or your confirmation email.
  • Any posting that says no calls: follow the instruction. Use email or the portal instead.

What to say when you call or stop by

Call mid-morning or mid-afternoon on a weekday, never during a meal rush. Ask for the hiring manager by title. If they’re busy, ask when’s a better time and call back once.

When you reach them, keep it under a minute:

“Hi, my name is [your name]. I applied online last Tuesday for the cashier opening. I wanted to make sure you received it and let you know I can work evenings and weekends, including Sundays. Is there anything else you need from me?”

Mention your availability because it’s often the deciding factor. In the same October 2026 r/walmart thread, a commenter said a store pulled up their application and turned them down for not being available Sundays. They opened their Sunday availability and got the call. The original poster, who’d been trying for three years, updated the thread to say they had an interview set up.

Stopping by works the same way: go at a quiet hour, bring a printed copy of your application or resume, and ask for the manager. If they’re out, leave your name and the position with someone at the service desk instead of waiting around.

Job application follow-up email template

For office roles, or any employer that asks for email, send one short message about a week after you apply. Use the job title in the subject line so it’s easy to find.

Subject: Following up: Customer Service Representative application

Hi [hiring manager’s name],

I applied for the Customer Service Representative position on October 20 and wanted to confirm you received my application. I’ve handled customer calls for two years and can start on two weeks’ notice. Is there anything else you need from me?

Thank you for your time,
[Your name]
[Phone number]

Change the details to fit, and keep one specific line about why you fit. Skip the attachments unless they asked. No name in the posting? Address it to the hiring team, and after this one email, wait.

When following up hurts your chances

Following up can backfire when it ignores what the employer asked for. In a May 2026 r/humanresources thread with 274 upvotes, a recruiter described a candidate who called three times in a row, emailed and left two voicemails, even though the voicemail and the post-application text both said to email instead. A reply with 129 upvotes explained the problem:

“the behavior like OP described actually puts an applicant at a disadvantage most of the time (at my work at least). It’s mainly because they’re showing behavioral issues – not following the appropriate requested communication channels”
– r/humanresources, May 2026 (129 upvotes)

So read the posting and the confirmation message before you pick up the phone, and if either says “don’t call,” that’s your answer.

Keep your expectations honest too. A former recruiter in a September 2026 r/jobsearchhacks thread said a follow-up got an application a closer look if they hadn’t reviewed it yet, but guaranteed nothing. And in an August 2026 r/interviews thread, one commenter doubted anyone ever lost a job just for not emailing. A follow-up helps at the margin. What decides it? The application itself, which still has to fit the job.

If you still hear nothing

After one follow-up and another week of silence, move on. Apply to the next place on your list, and if your availability is narrow, widen it where you can. Our plan for how to get a job fast shows how to build that list. A Target applicant in September 2026 was moved to “no longer under consideration” after six recorded interviews, and replies pointed to availability or something in the application, not the lack of a call.

Use the time you’d spend chasing to fix what you can control. At Walmart, add other positions to your preferences inside the 60-day window. Elsewhere, apply to two or three nearby locations at once, since franchise restaurants hire separately.

How to follow up on a job application: common questions

Should you follow up on a job application?

Yes, once, unless the posting says not to. A short call or email about a week after applying can get your application looked at sooner. It won’t change the outcome if you don’t fit the role.

How long should you wait to follow up?

About a week. Walmart says it tries to respond to applicants within a week, so contacting a store sooner usually reaches someone who hasn’t looked yet.

How do you check the status of a job application?

Log in to the portal where you applied and look for pending steps such as an assessment. For franchise restaurants like McDonald’s, call the store where you applied and ask the hiring manager, since hiring happens at the store level.

Is it better to call or email?

Call or visit for store and restaurant jobs, where the manager hires. Email for office jobs and for any employer that asks for email. Never call when the posting or confirmation says not to.

Can you follow up more than once?

Once is the safe limit before an interview. A second contact a week later is acceptable only if the first one got no answer at all, and it should be a short email, not another call.

What about following up after an interview?

That’s a different message. Thank the interviewer within a day, then wait for the timeline they gave you before asking for an update.
