Most Marshalls interview questions are ones you can prepare tonight: tell me about yourself, why Marshalls, your availability, and how you’d handle an angry customer or a coworker you don’t get along with. The answers that stand out use the duties Marshalls lists on its own posting, like store recovery and signing customers up for the store credit card.
Marshalls belongs to TJX, the same company as TJ Maxx. In the five states we compared, Marshalls and TJ Maxx postings carried exactly the same starting pay range, and every range was 50 cents wide.
I interviewed job seekers at Walmart and later helped introduce a new interview score sheet there, but I never worked at Marshalls. The details below come from Marshalls postings on the TJX careers site, read in October 2026, and from Marshalls and TJX workers on Reddit in 2026.
How Marshalls hires
Marshalls hires through the TJX careers site, one store at a time. You apply online to a specific store, a manager calls to set up an interview, and the interview itself is usually a short conversation at the store. Some applicants report a second, shorter interview.
- Apply online. Each posting names the store and lists its starting pay range in the states where we checked. Apply to stores you can get to for every shift you list.
- The interview. One applicant in September 2026 said it “felt more of a conversation then an interview,” and the manager even walked through the dress code.
- A second interview. An applicant who was hired in July 2026 said a second interview followed if the first went well.
- Not hearing back. A former Marshalls cashier on r/TJX in July 2026 kept getting rejected at nearby stores. Replies suggested calling the store after applying and saying you’re a former employee.
Marshalls interview questions associates report
A former Ross manager who interviewed at Marshalls and TJ Maxx said in September 2026 that “they read a script.” Replies to a July 2026 merchandise associate applicant on r/marshallsfinds listed the questions most worth preparing for:
“How do you handle conflict? Why do you think you’re a good fit? How would you handle theft? Have you ever found yourself in a position with another co worker where you didn’t get along? Describe yourself as a worker/employee. Do you work well in fast pace environments? Tell me a time you’ve had to deal with an angry customer.”
– r/marshallsfinds, July 2026
That applicant was hired a week later. Here are the questions that came up most across the 2026 threads we read, with sample answers to adapt.
Tell me about yourself
A customer experience coordinator hired in 2026 said they were asked about themselves as a person: where they’re from, their plans and their goals. Keep it to three short parts. Say what you do now, give one example of work or responsibility, and add why you’re applying.
Sample: “I’m finishing my associate degree at night, and I’ve worked the counter at a dry cleaner for a year, so I’m used to handling clothes carefully and dealing with customers. I’m looking for steady daytime hours closer to home.”
Why do you want to work at Marshalls?
Name something you’ve actually noticed as a shopper. TJX says merchandise arrives in its stores several times a week, and it tells customers, “If you love it, grab it!” A line about finding something new on every visit sounds real. Then add an honest practical reason, like the hours or the location.
Sample: “I shop here a lot, and the home section is different almost every time I come in, which keeps it interesting. I’d like to help people find things in a store that changes that fast, and the store is a short bus ride from my place.”
How would you handle an angry customer?
Show the steps: listen without interrupting, apologize for the trouble, fix what you can, and get a coordinator or manager when it’s beyond you. The Marshalls posting asks associates to “respond appropriately to changes in direction or unexpected situations,” so staying calm is the point of the question.
Sample: “A customer at the dry cleaner was upset because a stain hadn’t come out. I let the customer explain, said I was sorry, and checked the ticket. Then I asked my manager whether we could redo it at no charge, and we did.”

Tell me about a coworker you didn’t get along with
Pick a small, real disagreement, describe what you did to fix it, and end on the result. Don’t trash the coworker. The posting asks for someone who “works effectively with peers and supervisors.” If you’re asked why you left that job, our guide on why you left your last job has sample answers.
What is your availability?
This one often decides the interview.
Why? The posting asks for someone “able to work a flexible schedule to support business needs.” The next section shows the shift times Marshalls workers describe, so you can give exact hours.
Questions the Marshalls posting points to
Nobody quoted these word for word on Reddit. But the Marshalls cashier posting lists the duties a manager hires for, so follow-up questions tend to come from it. Answer with the posting’s words plus one example.
How do you feel about asking customers to sign up for a credit card?
Nervous about this part? Plenty of applicants are. The posting says associates promote “credit and loyalty programs.” The coordinator who answered that September thread put it more bluntly: “a huge thing is selling the tjx rewards credit card and getting sign-ups.” Say you’re comfortable mentioning it at every transaction and taking a no politely. If you’ve ever asked customers to join a rewards program, use that example.

How would you handle theft?
This one appears in the July 2026 question list, and the posting asks associates to support “store shrink reduction goals and programs.” Don’t say you’d confront or chase anyone. Say you’d stay friendly and attentive on the floor, then tell a manager or loss prevention right away.
Are you OK working anywhere in the store?
Marshalls says associates “may be cross-trained to work in multiple areas of the store,” which can mean the register, the sales floor, the fitting room or processing new merchandise. They also handle store recovery “as needed throughout the day,” putting clothes back where they belong. Say yes and mention anything you’ve done that’s close.

Can you lift heavy objects?
The posting says associates must be “capable of lifting heavy objects with or without reasonable accommodation.” Associates process new merchandise for the sales floor, so say yes if it’s true and give an example. The posting doesn’t name a weight.
Shift times and your availability answer
Marshalls postings don’t list shift times, so applicants ask on Reddit. In March 2026, a part-time merchandise associate applicant who relies on public transit asked what the start and end times were, and an associate replied with a long list of examples:
- Morning merchandise shifts such as 6am-11am or 6am-1pm.
- Midday shifts such as 9:30am-2:30pm or 9:30am-4:30pm.
- Evening shifts such as 3pm-10pm or 5pm-10pm.
- Cashier shifts “anywhere between 9:30am-10pm.”
The same reply said that for public transport, “they will work around that for you.” The applicant was available 9am to 8pm, seven days a week, and later posted that they got the job. So give the manager a real window, not “anytime,” and mention early mornings if you can do them. Can you also work weekends? Say so up front.
Sample: “I can work 6am to 1pm any weekday, and all day Saturday. I take the bus, so I can’t do closing shifts that end after 9.”
Marshalls starting pay, state by state
Marshalls lists a starting pay range on its U.S. postings in every state we checked, and each cashier or associate range was 50 cents wide. In the five states where we also had TJ Maxx postings, the two chains matched to the cent.

| State | Marshalls posting | Marshalls range | TJ Maxx range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | Houston cashier | $13.00-$13.50 | $13.00-$13.50 |
| Georgia | Alpharetta | $13.25-$13.75 | $13.25-$13.75 |
| Ohio | Warrensville Heights seasonal merchandise | $13.50-$14.00 | $13.50-$14.00 |
| Colorado | Golden cashier | $15.75-$16.25 | $15.75-$16.25 |
| California | Campbell cashier | $16.90-$17.40 | $16.90-$17.40 |
| Maryland | Annapolis cashier | $15.25-$15.75 | not checked |
| New Jersey | Paramus | $15.92-$16.42 | not checked |
| Massachusetts | Stoneham cashier | $16.25-$16.75 | not checked |
| Connecticut | Avon cashier | $16.94-$17.44 | not checked |
Marshalls postings read October 29, 2026; TJ Maxx postings read October 27, 2026. A coordinator role pays a little more. An Ohio merchandising coordinator posting starts $1.00 above the Ohio associate posting, and a Georgia key carrier posting starts $1.75 above Georgia’s. Loss prevention ranges are wider, such as $13.30-$18.60 in Charlotte. Canadian Marshalls postings showed no pay range.
What does this mean for the interview? With a 50-cent range, there’s little room to negotiate the rate, so ask about hours instead. At $13.00 an hour, 25 hours a week comes to $325 before taxes; our hourly to salary calculator works it out for your own rate.
What to wear to a Marshalls interview
Dress neat and casual: clean jeans or plain pants and a collared shirt, blouse or nice sweater. That’s what Marshalls and TJX workers suggested on Reddit in September 2026, and the coordinator who answered said they wore plain jeans and a patterned button-up top.
One reply was firm about what not to wear: “Do not come in pajama bottoms, sweats or baggy t-shirts.” Another suggested bringing a printed resume. The coordinator also said the associate dress code is business casual, so dressing that way for the interview shows you’ve seen it.
After the offer: seasonal jobs and weekly pay
If you’re hired for the holiday season, whether you stay afterward depends on the store and on how you work. A seasonal hire asked r/TjMaxx about this in October 2026, two days before starting.
- Staying on. One reply said seasonal hires are kept if they work hard and have a good relationship with the manager. Another said some stores simply don’t need as many people after the season.
- Pay frequency. Two replies in that thread, one from an associate in Hawaii, said Marshalls pays weekly. Ask at orientation to confirm for your store.
- Learning fast. The advice was practical: be open to being told what to do, ask questions, and stay off your phone.
Coordinator and assistant store manager interviews go deeper into leadership, and our TJ Maxx interview questions guide covers those TJX roles in detail. For another off-price chain, see our Burlington interview questions.
Marshalls interview FAQ
Is a Marshalls interview the same as TJ Maxx?
Very close. Both are TJX stores, the posting text for associates is the same, and the starting pay matched in every state we compared. A former Ross manager who interviewed at both described the same scripted questions.
What do Marshalls workers do?
Associates ring purchases and returns, promote the credit card and loyalty programs, process new merchandise for the floor, recover the store through the day and keep it clean. Many are cross-trained to work the register, sales floor and fitting room.
How long is a Marshalls interview?
Usually short, and often more like a conversation. Some applicants report a second, shorter interview before an offer.
Does Marshalls pay weekly?
Marshalls associates on Reddit said yes in October 2026. Confirm for your store at orientation.
Can you get rehired at Marshalls?
You can apply again. A former associate who kept getting rejected at nearby stores was told to call the store after applying and say they used to work at Marshalls.
