Burlington Interview Questions: Availability Comes First

By Jacob Gates 10 min read

Burlington job applicant in a retail store interview

Burlington Stores, the off-price chain that used to trade as Burlington Coat Factory, mostly asks three things in a store interview: when you can work, what customer or work experience you have, and why you applied. Availability carries the most weight.

Those are the Burlington interview questions candidates report most for cashier, sales floor and stocking jobs. The schedule answer matters more than a polished pitch, and Burlington’s own job postings explain why.

I never worked at Burlington. What follows comes from its careers pages, read on October 17, 2026, plus candidates and store leaders describing their own stores. Treat all of it as reports, because processes vary by location.

How Burlington hires store associates, step by step

You’ll apply through Burlington’s careers site, move through an automated chat, meet a store manager, and then wait for a text or email offer. Pressing Apply Now on a seasonal sales associate posting on October 17, 2026 opened a chat-style page at olivia.paradox.ai.

Candidates describe the same bot. In June 2026 a poster in r/BurlingtonCoatFactory said the site had them book a group interview before they finished the application. Another commenter in that thread answered flatly that it’s real.

The word “group” trips people up. A Glassdoor reviewer in Buena Park, California (October 2025) wrote that the site calls it a group interview, though you may only be interviewed individually. A May 2026 commenter describes being left in one room and then interviewed one at a time in another.

“At every store I’ve worked with Burlington as leadership I’ve never conducted a true group interview. It helps us fit more people in is how it was told to me”
– r/BurlingtonCoatFactory, June 2026 (2 upvotes)

You’ll most likely get a one-on-one, and sometimes a few candidates at once. Either way, a manager runs it. A May 2026 commenter described the entrance routine: you tell the person in the vest at the stand you’re there for an interview, and they radio the manager, who takes you to an office. The same commenter says interviews rarely last more than 10 minutes.

Glassdoor’s page for retail sales associates (updated February 4, 2026, 60 ratings) lists a one-on-one interview in 27% of reports, a background check in 12% and a group panel in 4%. Candidates rated the difficulty 2 out of 5, and the average time to get hired was 6 days.

Target works differently. Most Target applicants record answers to six virtual questions before any manager meets them, as our Target interview guide explains. The Burlington reports describe a store sit-down instead.

The Burlington interview questions candidates report

Burlington’s careers pages don’t list interview questions, so this set comes from candidate reports: three Glassdoor reviews from August to October 2025, Indeed answers dated 2020 to 2024, and r/BurlingtonCoatFactory threads from 2026. The same five questions keep coming back.

“It’s a pretty easy interview. They’re just looking for people that they know will show up to work above all else. They’ll ask you typical questions about your work experiences, and what made you decide to apply at Burlington.”
– r/BurlingtonCoatFactory, June 2026 (2 upvotes)

The Glassdoor numbers agree. Of the 60 reports, only 4% mention a personality test and 3% an IQ-style test, so a test isn’t the norm. If one shows up, answer it honestly and in your own words.

What is your availability?

Three Glassdoor reviewers from August, September and October 2025 each mention availability or hours, and the MockQuestions practice set lists it first. The interviewer is checking whether your hours fit the job. Every posting on the careers site says candidates “must be able to work a flexible schedule; including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.”

Say this: “I can work Tuesday through Saturday, any shift after 3 p.m., and full days on weekends. I’m not free Sunday mornings. I can start Monday.”

Not this: “Whenever you need me.” Skip it unless it’s true.

Name real windows and keep them. A yes to a shift you can’t cover ends in a no-show, and that’ll cost you the job faster than a narrow window would. If you really are open, say “any day, any shift, including holidays” and mean it.

Tell me about your work experience

Indeed users report “Tell me about your work history” and “Do you have any retail experience?” in answers from 2020 to 2022. A Glassdoor reviewer in Noblesville, Indiana (September 2025) said the managers were looking for people with any customer service experience. You don’t need a retail title to answer.

Say this: “I ran a register at my school’s snack bar for two seasons, so I’m used to a line and to counting back change. I never missed a scheduled shift.”

No job yet? Use school projects, volunteering or family responsibilities, and pick one where you were reliable and dealt with people.

Why do you want to work at Burlington?

An Indeed answer from February 2020 and the June 2026 Reddit thread above both put this in the interview. Tie your answer to what the store sells. Burlington’s benefits page says its merchandise is “already offered at up to 65% off department store prices,” which is the company’s own claim about its deals.

Say this: “I like finding good brands at a better price, and I’d like to be the person who helps shoppers find them. The store is ten minutes from home, so I can make every shift.”

Not this: “I just need a job.” It’s true for many people, but it doesn’t answer the question.

Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer

A Glassdoor reviewer in Buena Park (October 2025) reported this one, and an Indeed answer from May 2022 asked for a customer complaint and how it ended. MockQuestions’ practice set adds a customer arguing over a return, though that’s a practice question, not a report. Tell one story in three beats: what the customer needed, what you did, what happened.

Say this: “A shopper couldn’t find a gift in her size. I checked the stockroom, found one and walked it to the register. She asked for the manager so she could say thanks.”

Applying for stocking? Swap the customer for a teammate: a delivery that ran late, a rack that needed ticketing before open, and what you did about it.

Tell me about a mistake and what you learned

Two Indeed answers, from November 2023 and January 2024, report it. The second came from a phone interview that was followed by an in-person one. Pick a small mistake you caught yourself, and end on the habit you changed.

Say this: “I mislabeled two boxes at a stockroom job. I caught it at the end of the shift and relabeled them before the truck left. Now I check the count twice.”

Burlington’s own postings, role by role

Burlington’s job postings show what the interviewer has in mind. On October 17, 2026 three seasonal part-time listings were open, one per main store role.

Role and storeWhat the posting listsBase pay
Cashier, Cincinnati, OHRings sales; handles layaways, returns, exchanges$13.50/hr
Sales associate, Fredericksburg, VAHelps customers; tidies the floor; any department$13.50/hr
Stocking associate, York, PAReceives freight; tickets and stocks the floor$13.50/hr

All three list the position type as Regular Part-Time and carry the same flexible-schedule line. Pay differs by store, so $13.50 isn’t a national rate; it’s three data points. The full duties are in Burlington’s seasonal cashier listing.

The wording also hints at the questions. The cashier posting asks whether you can think on your feet in a fast-paced environment. The stocking posting asks whether you’d thrive in a process-driven one. The sales listing wants someone outgoing and organized. Prepare one story for the phrase that fits your role.

Burlington’s Stores page names sales, receiving, cashier, asset protection and store management teams. It doesn’t name a separate fitting room job, so if a manager brings one up, ask what the shift covers. Receiving is the stockroom work: ticketing, tagging and moving merchandise to the floor.

Distribution centers are a different hire. Burlington’s page puts them in New Jersey and California and lists warehouse associates, forklift operators, maintenance technicians and yard jockeys with a Class A CDL. Supervisor and assistant store manager interviews run on another track, and no verifiable source lists their questions.

Burlington’s benefits page lists an associate and family discount, bonus added-discount days, tuition reimbursement and a 401(k) matching program for eligible associates. It doesn’t publish a discount percentage. The York stocking listing adds that part-time associates may get up to 4 hours of paid time off a year after one year of service. No minimum age appears on the pages checked, so confirm it on the posting for your store.

Seasonal hiring in October 2026

Burlington’s advertising for the holidays right now. Its careers pages carry a “Now Hiring for the Holidays” banner as of October 17, 2026, and seasonal cashier, sales and stocking listings are open. The pages don’t list 2026 hiring-event dates or a headcount target.

A commenter writing as store staff explained in October 2026 why an applicant was told a job wasn’t open after an interview had been booked:

“Right now we can hire as many people as we want (everyone is seasonal) and you never know if someone isn’t going to work out or a regular employee is going to leave.”
– r/BurlingtonCoatFactory, October 2026 (2 upvotes)

That’s one commenter describing one store. It does fit the listings, though. Each says seasonal in the title but Regular Part-Time as the position type, so ask the manager whether your job has an end date. For pay timing and other retailers’ holiday hiring, see seasonal jobs hiring in 2026. Kohl’s is filling seasonal store jobs too, and our Kohl’s interview questions guide covers how its interviews run.

Hours can lag the hiring. In September 2026 a receiving associate asked what to expect, and two commenters gave opposite pictures. One said new hires pick up shifts or get about four hours a week, or none. The other said hours “will pick up starting next month” as bigger trucks arrive.

After the offer: orientation and the first schedule

The interview is the easy part to prepare for. The wait after the offer is where r/BurlingtonCoatFactory posters report trouble.

Orientation comes first. A commenter in May 2026 says you do get paid for it. Another in May 2026 described the training as mostly about four hours on a computer. Some new hires also wait on a background check. In October 2026 a seasonal hire wrote that the offer arrived September 29, the wage and start date were already showing, the check hadn’t cleared, and the store said to come in anyway. A second poster reported the same wait from a September 22 offer.

“You won’t be on the schedule for two weeks because those schedules have already been made. You can call and let your manager know you’re available during that time if they need help.”
– r/BurlingtonCoatFactory, May 2026 (4 upvotes)

Two weeks shows up across the threads, but it isn’t a rule. Another commenter in May 2026 said schedules at their store usually appear on Wednesday. A September 2026 poster hired as a cashier had orientation on August 25 and still showed zero hours on September 8. Complaint threads are self-selected, so use them to plan, not to predict.

Four-step timeline from application to first shift: a chat page, a store interview averaging 6 days to hire on Glassdoor, paid computer-based orientation, and a first shift about two weeks later per Reddit reports

Ask three things before you leave the interview. When will you be on the schedule? Ask for the week, since commenters say schedules are made ahead. Which shifts does the role start with? Receiving shifts follow the truck’s arrival, according to a September 2026 commenter. Who do you call when the app shows nothing? A May 2026 commenter says to phone the store and ask for the manager on duty.

What to wear and bring to a Burlington interview

Dress one step above the floor staff: a clean top, tidy pants or jeans without holes, and closed-toe shoes. An August 2026 cashier hire wore a t-shirt without a logo and jeans. An October 2026 commenter says shoes have to be closed-toe, so start there.

The reports name no required documents. Take your availability written down, a pen, and the confirmation message with the store address, then read that message for anything the store adds.

Burlington interview FAQ

What Burlington interview questions do candidates report?

Candidates report questions about availability, work history, why you applied, a time you helped a customer, and a mistake you learned from. Reports call the interview short and basic, and availability is the answer that carries weight.

How long does Burlington take to hire?

Glassdoor’s retail sales associate page (updated February 4, 2026) reports an average of 6 days to get hired across 60 interviews, against 11 days company-wide. A December 2025 Reddit commenter got a congratulations text within 3 days. First shifts can come about two weeks after orientation.

Does Burlington hire on the spot?

Sometimes, according to reports. An August 2026 Reddit commenter says the interviewer asked about experience and availability and “basically hired me on the spot.” A Glassdoor reviewer in Kokomo, Indiana (August 2025) got an answer right away. Others hear back within days.

What should I wear to a Burlington interview?

Wear a clean, plain top, tidy pants or jeans, and closed-toe shoes. One August 2026 hire wore a logo-free t-shirt and jeans. Skip logos and anything you couldn’t wear on the floor.

Is a Burlington group interview hard?

Reports call it easy and short. You’ll answer a few questions in the same room or one at a time, so keep answers brief, let others finish, and still give your own availability.

Is it easy to get hired at Burlington?

Glassdoor candidates rated the retail sales associate interview 2 out of 5 for difficulty, with 63% positive experiences (updated February 4, 2026). One commenter writing as store staff says hiring is heavy right now, and commenters on an October 2026 rejection thread named availability first.
