Trader Joe’s hires Crew through its own job board, one store at a time, and the interview is mostly a conversation about you: why this store, which products you buy, and when you can work. Candidates report one to three rounds with Mates, sometimes ending with the Captain.
Crew run the register, stock shelves and build displays, according to the company’s Our Crew page, so most questions come down to whether you’d enjoy helping customers all day.
How Trader Joe’s hiring works, from the job board to the offer
You apply on Trader Joe’s own job board, and each store runs its own recruiting. The careers FAQ, read on October 19, 2026, says candidates are typically reviewed within three weeks and that you’ll hear from every store you applied to.
The job board listed 237 open positions that day and filters by state, zip code and position type: Crew, Mate or Office. When nothing’s open near you, the FAQ points you to a Job Alert and the Crew Talent Pool.
After you submit, a confirmation email arrives and your status lives on the Careers Welcome Back page. The FAQ warns that the store’s email or text can land in spam or a text blocker, so its fix is to call the store and say you’re still interested.
A phone screen is a normal step. When a message tells you to call the store to book one, the FAQ suggests weekdays between 9 and 11 AM or 2 and 5 PM, because stores are busiest on weekends. It also says Trader Joe’s begins hiring Crew at 16, and minors need a work permit and documentation.
What does the application itself ask? An October 2025 r/tjcrew reply reported two open boxes: “What are you looking for in your next job?” and “What does good customer service mean to you?” That’s one candidate’s report, and it suggests you’ll answer the second question before anyone meets you.
How crowded is the field? A r/tjcrew commenter put numbers on one store (January 2026, 28 upvotes):
“Trader joe’s often gets a lot of applications, last summer my store had 300+ applications for like 5 crew openings. they have to be veryyy picky”
– r/tjcrew, January 2026 (28 upvotes)
Trader Joe’s doesn’t publish an acceptance rate, so read that as one store’s scale. Another poster (November 2025) applied online, introduced themselves in the store the next day, and had an interview email the same day. A single story doesn’t prove much, but a short, friendly visit costs you ten minutes and shows the Mates who you are.
Which title you can actually apply for
Outsiders can apply for Crew, and for Mate if they have supervisory experience. Merchant and Captain are promotion-only, according to Trader Joe’s Our Crew page, read on October 19, 2026.
| Title | Hired from outside? | What the source asks | Posted pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crew | Yes | “We can teach you the rest”; evenings and weekends needed | $14 to $21 an hour |
| Merchant | No, promoted from Crew | Customer service champions, identified by their connection with customers | Not posted |
| Mate | Yes, or promoted | 3+ years of retail, restaurant or hospitality work, 2+ years supervising | $24 to $32 an hour |
| Captain | No, promoted from Mate | Store leader, always promoted from within | Not posted |
The Crew range comes from 17 Crew postings on the first page of the job board, and the Mate range from the Peabody and Quincy, Massachusetts postings, all read on October 19, 2026. It’s a one-day sample of ranges, so your store may sit outside it. Where does Merchant fit? Nowhere on the job board, because Merchants are promoted from Crew.
Mate postings ask for a high school degree or equivalent, say Trader Joe’s receives thousands of applications a year, and add that a cover letter guarantees a response. Crew is still the main route in: the company’s What We Offer page says 78% of Mates started as Crew.
Apply to the title your history supports. The Crew posting asks for “a passion for people and a fervor for food” and calls art experience, including signage and chalk work, a plus, while the Mate posting asks for years of supervising.

Questions Trader Joe’s interviewers ask, with answers that fit
Trader Joe’s doesn’t publish a list of interview questions. The ones below come from Indeed answers dated 2022 to 2024, Glassdoor reports and r/tjcrew threads, each tagged with its source, and your store may skip some of them.
1. Why do you want to work at Trader Joe’s?
Indeed answers from March 2022, May 2022 and April 2024 all list it, and a January 2024 r/tjcrew poster said the phone screen asked why Trader Joe’s and whether they’d shopped there before. So the interviewer is hearing whether you’ve actually been in a store. Answer with something you’ve seen on the sales floor, not something you read online.
Say this: “I stop in most Saturdays, and I like that the crew hand-letter the signs and talk to every person in line. I’d like to be the one who gives people that experience, and I’m open on weekends.”
Not this: “I need a job close to home.” True for plenty of people, and it gives the Mate nothing about you to remember.
What if nothing special comes to mind? Walk the sales floor once before the interview and notice one thing a crew member does for a customer.
2. What’s your favorite Trader Joe’s product, and why?
Four Indeed answers (two from July 2022, two from May 2022) mention it, and a July 2024 r/tjcrew commenter (5 upvotes) described how it went:
“Be ready to answer what is your #1 favorite TJ product and why….I answered “I only get one?”…. The interviewers laughed ….and then I listed my five #1’s and got the job!”
– r/tjcrew, July 2024 (5 upvotes)
Another commenter in that thread (4 upvotes) had prepared hard and was never asked. Pick a product you really buy and name what you do with it: “I put the Everything but the Bagel seasoning on eggs and popcorn, and I’ve talked three friends into buying it.” A real habit beats a brand slogan.
3. What does good customer service mean to you?
An April 2024 Indeed answer lists “What does exceptional customer service look like?” and an October 2025 r/tjcrew reply found the same idea in the application’s open box. The interviewer wants an action, not an adjective.
Use two sentences: what service is, then one moment you gave it. Sample: “It means the customer leaves knowing something they didn’t walk in with. A shopper once asked me for a dairy-free dessert, so I walked her to the freezer and told her which one I’d bought myself.”
4. Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer or coworker
A March 2023 Indeed answer lists a problem with a coworker and a rough customer, and a May 2022 answer lists the same pair.
Weak: “I stay calm and don’t take it personally.” That’s a trait, not a story. Fixed: “A customer was upset that the shelf was empty. I said I was sorry, checked the back with a coworker, found a case, and stocked it while she waited. She thanked me at the register.” Three beats do the work: the problem, what you did, how it ended.
5. How do you feel about getting feedback, and how do you work on a team?
A January 2024 r/tjcrew poster, who was interviewed by two Mates and then the Captain and hired the same day, recalled being asked how they felt about feedback and why teamwork matters. A March 2023 Indeed answer asks for a time a coworker gave you advice.
What’s the interviewer listening for? Whether you take advice without sulking. Name the advice, what you changed, and what got better. Skip any story where you were right and everyone else was wrong, because it tells the Mate you’ll argue with the next person who corrects you.
6. What is your availability?
A May 2022 Indeed answer lists it, and the Crew postings explain why: stores have “the greatest need for people that can work evenings and weekends.” All 17 sampled postings listed hours as “Up to 38.”
Give the real window, even if your schedule is tight. Open with your fixed limits, then the shifts you can cover: “Tuesday and Thursday I’m in class until 2, but I’m open every weekend and most evenings.” A promise you can’t keep will show up in month two.
7. Why did you leave your last job, and what did you like and dislike about it?
Two r/tjcrew posters (July 2023 and January 2024) said their interviews asked about the old job, what they liked and disliked, and why they left. Leave the bad manager out and give the reason in one sentence about the work: “The store cut my hours, and I want a job where I can grow into more.” Then spend the rest on what you liked.
8. Do you have any questions for us?
Yes. A July 2023 r/tjcrew commenter (5 upvotes) said they ask interviewers about themselves, such as a favorite new product or favorite thing about working there, because it’s rarely expected.
Ask something you’d like answered: “What does training look like for a new Crew member at this store?” Then listen, because Mates provide training and guidance, according to the Our Crew page.
How many interviews to expect and who runs them
Candidates often report a phone screen, then one to three in-person rounds with Mates, and sometimes a final round with the Captain, though the count changes by store. In Glassdoor’s 1,797 Trader Joe’s reports, 42% mention a one-on-one interview and 12% a group panel.
Smaller shares mention a background check (9%), a personality test (6%) and an IQ test (3%). Glassdoor users rate the interview 2.31 out of 5 for difficulty and 72.8% call the experience positive. These are self-reported shares, not company data.

A September 2026 Glassdoor Crew Member report from College Park, Maryland described three interviews over two weeks: a brief phone call, two supervisors, then the store manager, which the writer found harder. An October 2025 Los Angeles report called it “very vibes based” with two interviews. The high end is four: an August 2026 r/askanything post (1,423 upvotes) asked why Trader Joe’s wanted four interviews for a store clerk job.
What changes in the last round? A December 2025 r/tjcrew commenter (7 upvotes) who was hired after three interviews described it this way:
“The final interview was the caption and a crew member asking similar questions. A couple were identical. The difference was it felt like a vibe check. They didn’t take notes like the other interview.”
– r/tjcrew, December 2025 (7 upvotes)
What do you do with repeated questions? Tell the same true stories with the same warmth in every round, and jot down what you said right after the first interview, so that round two doesn’t contradict it.
The count really does vary:
“It’s different at every store. I had no phone interview, one in-person interview with the Captain, and got hired the next day.”
– r/tjcrew, December 2025 (1 upvote)
If you’re weighing grocers, the process differs: our Whole Foods interview guide covers an online assessment before the sit-down, the Aldi interview guide a group hiring event, and the Costco interview guide a third format.
How long the wait runs
Trader Joe’s says it typically reviews candidates within three weeks. Glassdoor users report an average of 14 days across 1,797 reports, and the two Crew reports quoted above, from College Park in September 2026 and Los Angeles in October 2025, each say the process took two weeks.
Reports describe a short gap between rounds. A November 2025 r/tjcrew commenter said it usually takes a couple of days to be offered a second interview, and noted the store was extra busy with Christmas products arriving. A February 2026 commenter who was told to expect a call got an email with an offer letter instead, so check your inbox before you phone.
The status page can lag behind reality. A December 2025 poster went through a phone screen and two in-person interviews while the online status stayed at “Phone Screen,” and a commenter on that thread said they got no confirmation emails until the last interview. What if a week passes after a round? Call the store at a quiet hour, as the FAQ suggests, and ask who has your file.
What to wear, and what the job pays and offers
Trader Joe’s publishes no interview dress code on its careers pages, read October 19, 2026, so choose clean, comfortable clothes you can stand in. Two July 2024 r/tjcrew replies (8 and 7 upvotes) said to check in at the Bridge, the front desk, and if no one’s there, tell a Mate in a Hawaiian shirt.
What will you earn? The FAQ says starting rates depend on the store’s location. The 17 Crew postings sampled on October 19, 2026 ranged from $14 to $21 an hour: Spokane, Washington $18 to $20, Jacksonville, Florida $17 to $19, Charlotte, North Carolina $14 to $17 and Corona, California $19 to $21. Each listed “Up to 38” hours.
What We Offer says Crew have the potential for an average 7% annual increase through performance reviews twice a year. It also says Trader Joe’s contributes 3.6% to 7.5% to each Crew member’s paid time-off account from hire, or around 5 to 10 days a year, and lists medical contributions as low as $25 a month for eligible Crew.
Eligibility has hour thresholds. The FAQ says Crew who average 14 or more hours qualify for dental and vision, and those averaging 28 or more qualify for medical. Paid time off starts on your first day, and the store discount is up to 20%. A 401(k) or a bonus follows once you’ve met the requirements.
