Starbucks starting pay for a new U.S. barista is the bottom of the range posted for that store: $15.25 an hour in 23 of the 47 states in a sample of 411 barista postings on apply.starbucks.com, and $20.25 at every California store sampled.
That number comes from Starbucks itself. Each barista posting prints a pay range, and the same posting says it’s typical for new partners to be hired at the entry point of that range. So the useful question isn’t what baristas make on average. It’s what your store’s posting says at the low end, and how many hours you’ll actually get.
Why the bottom of the posted range is your starting pay
Starbucks barista postings state that new partners are typically hired at the entry point of the range for their role, and that the range is set by geographic location. That bottom figure is what you’ll be offered, not the opening bid in a negotiation.
Look at the barista posting for the Lewisville, Texas store at Hwy 121 and I-35. It lists 15.25 to 17.31 USD. If you’re hired there, plan on $15.25. So what’s the top of the range for? It’s where a partner’s pay can climb over time, and the posting adds that individual decisions depend on the position and the candidate, which leaves room for an exception but promises none.
The ranges follow one formula. In every one of the 411 U.S. barista postings in the sample, the top of the range sits about 13.5% above the bottom. A $15.25 floor tops out at $17.31, a $20.25 floor at $22.99. Once you’ve found the bottom of your store’s range, you’ve got the ceiling too.

Experience isn’t what sets the number, since the postings say “No previous experience required,” and they print one range per store, with no separate rate for people who have worked a coffee bar before.
Starbucks starting pay by state
Starbucks starting pay ranges from $15.25 to $20.25 an hour across the states in the sample. Most of the South, the Midwest and the Mountain West start at $15.25, the Northeast and Pacific Northwest sit between $16 and $17.25, and California starts at $20.25 everywhere.
| Where you’d work | Typical bottom of the posted range | States in this tier |
|---|---|---|
| Most Southern, Midwest and Mountain stores | $15.25 | Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee and 12 more |
| A small step up | $15.75 | Florida, Illinois, South Carolina, Nebraska, North Dakota |
| Northeast and Hawaii | $16.00 to $16.75 | New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Hawaii, Oregon |
| Higher-wage states | $17.00 to $17.25 | Colorado, Connecticut, Washington, Alaska, Maine |
| Mid-Atlantic cities | $18.05 to $18.45 | Maryland (one posting), Washington, DC (one posting) |
| California | $20.25 | All 110 California postings in the sample |
Method: on November 7, 2026, the Starbucks Careers search returned 12,365 barista openings. We opened 450 of them one at a time and recorded the pay range each one prints. 411 U.S. postings carried a range, covering 47 states and DC; the 29 without a range were all Canadian stores. The postings were first listed between August 9 and October 10, 2026. The sample leans toward California (110 postings) and Texas (42), so read the table by state, not as a national average. Rows for Maryland and Washington, DC rest on one posting each, so treat them as a single store, not a state rule.

Starbucks starting pay in Texas
Texas baristas start at $15.25 at most stores. Of 42 Texas postings, nearly all list 15.25 to 17.31 USD, but the Austin store at Parmer and McNeil lists 16.25 to 18.44, a dollar higher at the bottom. Does the state figure tell you enough, then? Not always: a store can carry its own range, which is why you check the store’s posting instead of the state.
Starbucks starting pay in California
California baristas start at $20.25. All 110 California postings in the sample, from Fresno to Simi Valley to Corona, print the same 20.25 to 22.99 USD range. That’s $5 an hour above the $15.25 Texas floor for the same job title.
Florida shows how wide one state can spread. Florida postings ran from $15.25 to $18.25 at the bottom, with a Kissimmee store at Hwy 535 and N. Poinciana Blvd listing 18.25 to 20.72 USD.
Shift supervisor starting pay
Starbucks shift supervisors start at $19.37 an hour in Texas and 18 other states, $22.54 at most New York stores and $25.72 at every California store, based on 191 U.S. shift supervisor postings pulled the same day. That’s about $4 to $5.50 an hour above the barista floor in the same state.
The same 13.5% spread applies, so a $19.37 supervisor floor tops out at $21.99. Does the promotion pay off? Compare your current barista rate with the bottom of the supervisor range at your store. One Texas shift supervisor put the result plainly:
“I’m doing solo rent on SSV pay in TX. I shop at trader joes, go out to eat sometimes, and have a nice apartment with a pool and a gym. Its possible if youre disciplined with your money and know where to cut corners and how to utilize savings”
– r/starbucks (7 upvotes)
Notice who said it: that’s supervisor pay, not barista pay, and it comes with a budget.
What the rate turns into each month
A $15.25 starting rate comes to about $1,322 a month at 20 hours a week and about $1,983 at 30 hours, before taxes and tips. In California, $20.25 at 30 hours is about $2,633 a month. Hours move your paycheck more than the rate does.
That matters because the hours you’re hired for and the hours you’re scheduled can differ. One new barista described it this way:
“Side note, I was hired on as full time, and they told me a week ago they can’t guarantee me more than 12 hours weekly, and I noticed the only people who get over 20 hours are leaders.”
– r/starbucks, June 2026 (45 upvotes)
What does 12 hours a week pay? At $15.25, about $793 a month. Ask about typical weekly hours at that store before you accept, because a strong rate on a thin schedule still leaves you short.

The postings also list pay on top of the hourly rate: additional pay on eight observed holidays, a quarterly bonus opportunity, and paid vacation that accrues after an introductory period, up to 40 hours a year (64 in California). Benefits eligibility depends on hours too, and the Starbucks employee benefits breakdown explains how that’s counted.
Asking about pay in a Starbucks interview
Bring up hours, not the rate. Why hours? The rate is already printed on the posting, so asking a store manager to beat it rarely works when the company says new partners typically start at the entry point. What the manager does control is the schedule.

When I interviewed candidates in corporate hiring, the ones who asked about the schedule came across as people planning to stay. Questions about raising a posted number sounded like they were already comparing offers.
Say this: “I saw the range on the posting. How many hours a week do new baristas usually get at this store, and does that change after training?”
Not this: “Can you start me higher than $15.25?”
If you’re comparing offers, line the posted floor up against other entry jobs. McDonald’s crew postings print ranges the same way, so the comparison takes a minute. And once you’re hired, the Starbucks dress code is the next thing to sort out before your first shift.
Frequently asked questions
What is the starting hourly pay at Starbucks?
Starbucks starting pay is $15.25 an hour at most U.S. stores and $20.25 in California, according to the barista pay ranges Starbucks posted in November 2026. New partners typically start at the bottom of their store’s range.
How much does Starbucks pay 16-year-olds?
Starbucks barista postings show one pay range per store with no separate youth rate, so a younger hire starts at the same bottom-of-range figure as anyone else at that store. Age rules for hiring vary by state and aren’t printed in the range.
Does barista experience raise Starbucks starting pay?
Barista experience doesn’t change the posted range, which requires no previous experience. Starbucks says individual pay decisions depend on the position and candidate, so an exception is possible, but the stated norm is the entry point.
How much does a Starbucks barista make a month?
A Starbucks barista at $15.25 makes about $1,322 a month at 20 hours a week and about $1,983 at 30 hours, before taxes and tips. Your scheduled hours decide most of the difference.
Does Starbucks post pay for Canadian stores?
Not in this sample. All 29 barista postings without a pay range were Canadian stores, including Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, so Canadian applicants have to ask the store directly.
Before you apply, open the posting for the exact store you want and read the first number in its pay range. That’s the figure to plan your budget on.
